Siberian Facelift Part One

You know how you open a blog with a big, beautiful reveal
and immediately start ooohing and ahhhhing?

Yeah, well, this won't be one of those times.

This little makeover wouldn't be bloggable at all were it not for the fact that I promised to show it, and that it was done without spending a single dime.

Not a single dime, people.
Do you know how hard that is?

Keep that in mind before I open the door.

Siberia before

And Siberia as of this morning.

Still a work in progress.

If I felt like renaming this room (and I don't), I might choose The Graduate.  That's because nearly everything used in this room is a cast off from the dorm days of The Practical One.

This shower curtain graduated in 2011.

This part was kind of serendipitous because I had already decoupaged those cabinet pulls when I remembered that curtain.  I had been planning to fashion something together with fabric remnants, but decided to use that one instead.

Nothing like letting a hoarded napkin decide an entire room design...

I like it because not only is it free but it lets me introduce a dozen fun colors into the room. I plan to introduce them all.  I promise that there actually is a method to all this wackadoo madness...

For shower rings, I just sprayed those old plastic blue ones with white Fusion and then gave them a coat of the same trusty lime as the cabinet pulls.

Little wooden buttons were painted and glued to the hooks
to dress it up a little.

The extra cabinet is from the same graduating class as the shower curtain. It was white laminate, but I think it looks better painted heirloom white to blend better with the cabinets. I used Kilz on it first.  I'm not positive that's necessary since my HW has primer in it, but I would rather be safe than sorry when painting cheap laminate.

More green for the knobs.

The ugly brass light fixture got a facelift too.

I had originally intended to go white with it. (By the way, here's my tip of the day: Hoard burned out light bulbs to use when painting a light fixture.)  But really, I want to replace that fixture completely. That being the case, I didn't think it would hurt for it to go green as well.

Oh no, she didn't...

Oh yes, I did.

Wackadoo.
It's just a cheap brass fixture, people.

Now, I'm sure you noticed that this room is stark and boring and needs some
accessories to finish it.

Let me explain...

It's not going to get any.

You see, the room is not only called Siberia because it's cold in there; it's called Siberia because it's extremely remote. Basically, it's the Wonka Land of the home place. Nobody ever goes in, and nobody ever comes out. It just sits there,  hidden from view, a vast wasteland.

Emphasis on the waste part.

That's why I decided to change its function and give it a job description. Don't you think giving a space a job description just makes it perform better?

Yeah, I think so too.

Unfortunately, this post has already gotten too long so the full  lifestyle lift will have to be a post for another day. Hopefully by Monday.

Here's a little clue....

I need the Man of the Place to help me put up some final things before I'm finished, and he's still out of town.  Poor guy comes home to a honey do list every weekend. Good thing I give myself that Friday facial so he  comes home to sugar lips as well.

And that's the way it is. Friday, July 27, 2012...

Wow, Debbie! Once again I am thoroughly impressed. I think the Siberian Facelift looks great and that light fixture redo is simply genius! Did you just use normal spray paint on that?

I bet your hubby will be impressed too...with Siberia and the Sugarlips. :)

Happy Weekend!

Hi Debbie!

It's hard to believe those handles were decoupaged before you remembered that old shower curtain.

I liked the cupboard pull re-do yesterday but seeing them on the cabinet really shows how cute they are!

I can't wait to see what's next.

A room where I could hide and no one would come looking for me... It's a nice thought some days. It looks like you're about to get your cheerful hideaway finished. I hang on to "graduated" housewares, too -- at least I used to. I've been decluttering them. Just watch... As soon as I get rid of them, they'll be exactly what I need for a project. Just watch!

I hope you'll join my impromptu Olympic link-up. I'd love to see which of your past posts you'd choose! Enjoy your evening!

WOW...I am so impressed. Especially the way the shower curtain and the handles go together like that...soo cute. I am always so amazed when women do all that painting on their own. I have never been much of a painter....I make such a mess that my hubby usually just bans me from the room, haha...Anyway, this all just looks great! Hope you have a good week-end.

Debbie -- I think I need to remember to NOT visit when I have coffee in hand -- it usually ends up spurting somewhere, lol.

Siberia looks MARVELOUS!! I am loving the whole colorful look -- did you scrape the wallpaper? Boy, that is always such a job. I love the color you've used on the walls and the vanity looks like a whole different piece and I love what you've done with the light bar -- wish you loved close and I'd have you to lunch JUST to trick you into helping me do that to ALL the ugly, cheap brass ceiling fans my little house sports :)

Can't wait for the next installment and I am SOOOOO impressed that no $$$$ were spent :)

Siberia, lol!!!

Happy weekend!

Well, I'm ooohing and ahhhing - a lot! This looks fabulous. I can't believe you had that shower curtain that perfectly matches your wonderful door/drawer pulls you made. I love the painted light fixture, and the shower curtain rings with painted buttons are just so clever and cute. I'm thinking you are going to have a potting room, and it is going to be so great! I can't wait to see it when you finish, sugar lips! laurie

Oh how fun! I really love it! It's very lively and even tropical looking to me! Throw in a few artsy colorful palms and fish pics and you are instantly warming in the tropics. LOL! Seriously though, I am still very intrigued to see how you are going to double duty use this room. I love the spray paint projects you did even the light. I am really impressed with the shower rings. Those extra little buttons on them are so cute! This is a wonderfully creative makeover for no money! Bravo!

You did a GREAT job! I wished I could have you come do a redo on my bathroom. It REALLY needs a lot of tender loving care and creativeness. But then I guess I would need some cash to do it to. ((sigh)) One day I will find a way to spiff it up. [o=

Hi Debbie,

I so LOVE these new colors!! I really like your Heritage White; in the pictures it reminds me of our kitchen cabinet color, Dover White. But the shower curtain and the darling curtain rings with painted wooden buttons - that is just way cute. I really love stripes in cheerful colors like that. Debbie, you did a great job with all your painting, including the laminate cabinet, and the colorful handles and knobs are perfect with the other colors. I can't wait to see the final reveal.

I'm sorry I'm just now commenting; we just got home late yesterday afternoon from a trip to the mountains. Hope you have a great week!

Denise
