Well, I declare...

Just a quick post this morning as I get ready to celebrate the birthday of America.

Happy Independence Day!

In case I've failed to mention it before, I'm one of those slap happy, flag waving, patriotic Americans. I can't help myself. It's a genetic trait passed down by my slap happy, flag waving, patriotic parents.

Who inherited it from theirs...
Who inherited it from...

Well, you get the picture.

That's why I got very excited when I heard about a movement to celebrate the document that inspired the day. You know the one, it's the one that starts out, "When in the course of human events..."

The challenge is simple.  Just gather the family and friends together from your celebrations today, and collectively read the Declaration of Independence. If you don't have a copy, you can find it online.

Now, the way you read it is all up to you.

You can choose a reader, or pass it around. You can get the family to chime in with some periodic shouts of, "Huzzah!" if that's your cup of Boston tea.

Just do it.

After all, celebrating Independence Day without reading the Declaration is kind of like having birthday party, and forgetting to invite the guest of honor.

Anyone else in?

I read it last night on someone's blog, can't remember. What better words were written for and about our country? Have a great July 4th, and stay cool! xo

LOVE this idea Debbie! I'm thinking that as we gather together to pray before dinner tonight that this would be the perfect thing to read. Thank you so much for the reminder! :-)

Awesome! I'm a patriotic soul, too, although I must admit this day just sort of slid by me. We were on the road this morning, coming home from a couple days at my parents', and I guess that threw my whole day off a bit. But, I'm thankful for the birthday of our nation and never take the privilege of living in America for granted.

Happy 4th!

Debbie - been doing just what you suggest here! Watching the very excellent John Adams and 1776 this week and feeling so very nostalgic - especially with our good Andy Griffith's passing. So many in this country need to really understand what that document is saying - via the authors' original intent. Worldview means everything and when our present president censors any references to God when quoting from the Declaration, I tremble - with equal amounts of fear and anger.

But, then, that's a subject I tend to yak on and on about.

Just sayin' - Glorious 4th to you, friend!!

Joy!

Great idea, Debbie. I'm not sure I could have gotten my crowd quiet enough for anybody to read it, but I hope I can remember to try it next year. I'm a flag-waving American too, and I always have tears in my eyes at the end of the National Anthem. laurie

Well, I'm seeing this too late to take your challenge. Does it count that I did my own mental reflecting -- even if I didn't read the entire document?
