Copy Cat Coffee Table

Remember when we used to have all those copy cat challenges out here in blog land? I loved those. I haven't seen one around in a while so I guess I'll just have to make up my own copy cat challenge this morning. I'll call it  Debbie's Copycat Party for One.

Because I've been cheating off someone else's blog paper again,
and I'm  ready to yak about it.

This time, it's a copy cat coffee table.
(Try saying that three times fast.)

I gave a little sneak peak of the table in the collage that I posted on Friday. It was a project that I was supposed to finish in the month of February, but I didn't quite make it. March is looking pretty good so far, though. Just three days into the month, and she's basically done.

The inspiration:
This table from  The Endearing Home.

That table has lived in my head for quite a while now. I've just been waiting for  the right one to make over and wasn't willing to settle for something less than perfect.

Right after the first of the year, I ventured into the reStore
and found this  for a whopping $20.00

Little Miss Perfect

Close enough to perfect for me, anyway.

Yes, her top was seriously scratched, and yes, one of her drawers was broken.

Her shape was absolutely perfect though, and her wood was really solid.  I loved the shape of her legs and those little nobby things all the way around.  I was also almost positive that there was something really beautiful living under all that scratch and stain on the top, too.

 I was right.

I made my own chalk paint with some Heirloom white because, really, I just wanted a simple white finish on the bottom of this. That's not to say that I don't love the washed finishes, I just didn't want one here.

For now, at least,

To get the color I wanted for the top,
I used a base stain of Cabernet and then a second stain of  red mahogany.

I filled the holes for the knobs and replaced them with just one knob per drawer.  For now, I'm just using the old knobs, darkened with some oil rubbed bronze and espresso.  I'm actually planning to get new knobs entirely, but I stuck these there for now since they were free, and free is my BFF.

I'm not quite finished with the top. It still lacks (probably just one) coat of  tung oil. I'm trying to behave and wait a good week between the final stain and the finish.  Don't ask me how I know this, but being impatient between coats in a staining project can cause a big old mess and a lot of crying.

Who has time for mess and crying?

So right now, I'm twiddling my thumbs and staring at her.

And  thinking about the other furniture adventure I started in February.

Think I'll get it finished by the end the March?

Oh Debbie, I love, love this table!! That refinished top is GORGEOUS! It's all gorgeous. :) You did a terrific job on it. I wish we lived nearby so you could give me some lessons in re-finishing furniture, because you've re-finished some really nice pieces. I think the white base is perfect with the pretty, stained top, and I bet you'll enjoy this piece for a long time. Great copycat project!!

Thanks for sharing with us -- hope you have a great week.

I think you may have found your second career - love the table and I am very impressed that you did it yourself! Can't wait to see the chair.

What a gorgeous makeover - absolutely perfect!
I'm seriously behind too ( and even making customers wait an abnormal amount of time which is not good lol)
Good luck with the chair it looks like another diamond in the rough!

You must have the patience of Job to not take any shortcuts and do everything so expertly! I'm just too lazy, forgive me. I concede to simpler projects that don't require days and days. I like my stuff done in a trice.

I am humbled to see your quality fruit. Hmmmm - inspired.
Joy!

That turned out awesome Debbie. Yes, I was the queen of copy cat parties and I do indeed miss them. I may have to do one for Spring, what do you think? Not sure if anyone would show up though LOL..it's been so long. Very inspiring project you tackled here.

Debbie,
I love it. The top is stunning, and the lines of the table are so beautiful. I think your copy cat only improved on the original.
Nicely done!

Wow, my friend, that is one gorgeous makeover of a table. The little beading around it really stands out now. I LOVE the two-tone effect. I know it's hard to be patient, but maybe next week you can show us what kind of decor you're going to put on top. I look forward to it!! xo

Debbie, this is gorgeous! It would work perfectly in the old farmhouse that lives in my mind. The details are wonderful, and the top is amazing! Can't wait to see what you do with the chair. :-) It currently looks like a little sister to the undressed Victorian fainting couch sitting in my garage. All I know is that I won't get mine finished by the end of March. I won't even race you. I concede...

This is fabulous! I seriously love it. What a great look. I have been toying with the idea of doing something similar to my end tables which are mission style. Now I have lots to think about, but first all the bedrooms are going to be switched around, as far as who sleeps in which room! So excited about this!

Debbie! OM goodness! I am so impressed at how well it came out! You really do have a knack for refinishing...and an eye to see a wreck of a piece and visualize what it can be! I also like the wood and white look...and could use something just like that in my family room.

I'd love to go shopping with you sometime. I might learn what NOT to buy!

Cheers!

HOW DO YOU DO THIS?!??!! Seriously, little lady...this is nothing short of a miracle that has been performed here!! And if you can pull off making that chair look like new, I'm going to want to touch the hem of your garment! :-) Gosh...it's unbelievable! You have really deep vision AND patience...qualities that completely elude me in every way! I bow to you, woman of great power and skill!

Debbie, honestly, you are so talented! I would love to take a class from you - teaching me how to refinish furniture. Seriously. I am fascinated by how you transform these oldies (but evidently goodies) into something breathtakingly elegant and sophisticated. This might just have been your very best effort.

You're my hero - you know that, right?!

What a beautiful job you did Debbie, do you hear me clapping. I love to refinish furniture and see results like this. Dh has moved some old furniture from the barn to our garage for me to work on and just as soon as the weather breaks I will be refinishing them, I take lots of photos of my projects and never post them, as I have gone on to another one. Now I am going to copy cat your coffee table,~smile~ Thanks for sharing.

I love what you did with that table!! It looks absolutely stunning! Good job!

Funny you mentioned The Endearing Home - I love her decorating even though she uses colors I don't (except for the black and buffalo checks) - she has a way with putting things together that I really love.
