A Little Carpet Magic and a Lotta Cabinet Love

Remember my beautiful hand painted carpet?

Well, now you see it...

And now you don't.

OK, you kinda don't.

Please say you don't..

Even if you do let's just pretend you don't. OK?

In my recent yakabout, I mentioned the terrible, horrible, very bad, no good modern art  I had created on the living room carpet.  It was a dried on, chalk painted disaster, in case you have forgotten.  (And yes and thank you to those who commented with cleaning solutions. I did try them. Nothing made a dent. I think it's the plaster in the paint. Thanks a lot, Annie Sloan...)

Well...

We were just about to bite the bullet and purchase  new carpet for the whole room when a friend in the carpet biz suggested that we track down a good carpet man and at least try to patch it first.

"I said a good carpet man", he said.
"And don't even think about trying this one yourself. "

Because, well, you know...

So that's exactly what we did.  We moved the corner cabinet that started the whole thing and used a piece of carpet from under it. (That sucker isn't going anywhere. It's the only place in the entire house suited to it.)

Then, the carpet maven pulled back the carpet and patched it from the underside
...because apparently that's how it's done.  Who knew?

In the end, we were pleased with the result.. It cost a whopping $50.00 and bought us some time. New carpet was going to be over a thousand.

As for the corner cabinet that started the whole thing?
I'm pleased with the result there, too.

I'm planning to leave the top doors open because I like it like that.

The top has some of my Italian Countryside
and my mother-in-law's Wedgewood.

They play well together, don't you think?

The bottom is just full of the new Cameo Platinum that I've started to collect.

I love how the bottom doors are different from the top ones.

And see the tassels?

Yeah, well, I kinda like them too.

For now.

As I said earlier, this cabinet was made by my husband's grandfather.
He never did get around to putting knobs on the doors.

No one who has used it since has wanted to add them.

My mother-in-law put those tassels there,
and I'm leaving them right where they are.

For now.

Pretty good start on the living room project, though, don't you think?

Now that the floor is settled, it's time to decide on the walls...

What an awesome solution! I would never have even thought of that!

The cabinet looks great and I wouldn't put knobs on it now, either! The tassels are part of the heritage of the cabinet, passing down from one family generation to another!

I do love the Italian Countryside china. It does play well with the Wedgewood!

Too brilliant for words! Awesome fix - just love the savings - and no, I didn't notice the patch. Thought you found a miracle clean at first.

The cabinet is a keeper - been wanting one, myself - but the digs are too small and I've furniture enough at the moment. I like the open door look - though I feel like there needs something hanging from the doors beside the tassel. A wreath suction cupped to the glass? Wisteria draping over the top? I'd probably experiment with the overdone look before settling on the understated.

Have fun with it!
Joy!

It's beautiful! It's also the perfect corner, WITH the doors open... love that! I also have to comment on your Easter blog... it was so good Debbie, from the boing curls to the empty tomb, somehow it covered all of it for me.

Gorgeous! How lucky you are to be the recipient of not only the corner cupboard, but the dishes!

You are the right person to have them both.

Cheers! And yay for not having to buy new carpet just yet!

Debbie, what a great solution. Just for the record, I can't see where the "carpet maven" repaired the carpet. Your corner cabinet is wonderful -- such a family treasure. Love all the white dishes. Joni

I love when there are cheap fixes out there, and WOW, what a deal on repairing the carpet. It looks wonderful and so does the pretty cabinet, that's all decked out with beautiful dishes.
I'm looking forward to seeing the paint color that you're choosing. Decisions, decisions....xo

All I can say is WOW! The carpet fix looks fabulous. Your carpet man is pretty good! I just love what you've done with the corner cabinet. The dishes play well together and the pops of green just make it perfect. I wouldn't think of changing those tassels and the open doors just make the cabinet scream "Debbie".

Couldn't believe I missed three posts last week. That's what I get for making myself so busy. At least I got to savor them when I had time to finally enjoy them.Loved them all!!

So happy you finally have some time to get some things accomplished at home and even more, time to blog. I have missed your wonderful writing so very much!

I can't tell a bit. What a great solution.
And that cabinet is beautiful! And it holds so many dishes. You styled it perfectly. I always think that is so hard to do but I love the way you did it. I'm trying not to have corner cab envy, but I am consoling myself with the thought that I don't have a single corner in my LR or DR that would hold it anyway:-)

What a great piece... yes, the cabinet and the carpet! HAHA! I'm soooooo glad that worked out well... FOR NOW.

Everything looks soooo awesome, Debbie. Lot of hard work, eh? Worth every moment of it.

Hugs and happy week,

Seriously, I cannot see it. There must have been no fading issues to deal with. Reminds me of the time we had to replace a piece of carpet that my son's beagle chewed up right in the middle of my parents' living room...without my dad finding out. It involved searching for a carpet *match* under nearby furniture, some heavy-duty glue, and cola to get the right "aged" appearance on the 30-year old wool carpet. Your job sounds much better! (And looks better, too!)

Love that cupboard, and the dishes inside are so pretty.

Debbie, you are an amazing creator. The Creator loves that in you!

WOW that is awesome Debbie. So happy you did not have to go spend money on a new one! YAY, now you can go buy something else. That is what I would sell my husband:)

Once again Debbie, for 50 bucks you rocked it! Congratulations on having a beautiful cabinet addition to your home and $950 in your pocket and it really looks just fabuless. I'm thrilled for you!

One word...AMAZING! You would never even know there was a stain there. I shouldn't be surprised though. You've proven more than once that you have superhuman creative skills. I think I'll nickname you "Wonder Woman!"

Don't you love it when things work out perfectly! The carpet looks great. I love the new corner cabinet and so special that it is an heirloom!

I apologize for not commenting on your latest posts, I did read and enjoy them, but "life" is occurring big time around here and I'm literally dealing with a "pain in the neck!" LOL! Neck brace and all :-(

I know exactly what you mean about Easter not being the same as when the children were small. I'm a generation ahead of you and I still reminisce about when my girls (now about your age!) were small, dressed in frills, hunting eggs, etc!

Is the duchess kicking up her heels yet? Hope so!

This was such a good tip! All too often we just need to squeak out a bit more time and this is the way to do it.

Love the cabinet. I need to do the same with one of mine sans carpet disaster.

Great solution! and what a great price, too. It makes me think that we saved some left over carpet pieces, when we had new carpet installed several years ago. Of course, as long as we have the pieces, we won't need them, but throw it out and something will happen. :)

I loved your post today. It was heartfelt and beautiful, and I am being a pest by commenting on it in this post. You write so beautiful, and I can see through your writing what a kind, ernest, and striving to be more like our Savior kind of person. The Lord is not satisfied how we are now, He always wants us to try to be better, more like Him. Thank your for your post of today. Joni

Gosh, I love that Wedgewood and Italian Countryside!!! So pretty! That cabinet is amazing and I love that was made by your FIL! I'm so totally impressed with your carpet patch job! I can't even tell!! Wish I would've know about that when the boys went through their spitting out their chocolate milk stage. UGH!

Hi Debbie,

Yay, I'm so happy you were able to get the carpet repaired instead of spending money on all new carpet! It never occurred to me that you could have it patched, but it makes perfect sense. Taking a piece of carpet from under the cabinet was a great idea!

Speaking of the cabinet -- I LOVE it!!! It's a beautiful piece, and how wonderful that it's handmade by a family member. Your dishes look so pretty in there, and the painted interior is lovely. I just love to see pretty projects like this -- so much more interesting than buying everything brand new. Thanks for sharing with us, Debbie; I hope you have a wonderful week, my friend!

Hugs,

Denise

WOW! Well, you positively cannot tell it was fixed. I am so impressed!

Also love your cabs painted inside - makes the lovely Mikasa inside POP!

And wanted to tell you I read your newer post (comments closed)and burst into tears. It was stirring, and I thank you. Jesus is all about mercy and forgiveness and He has taught us to do the same. I know I have some forgiving and asking for forgiveness to do soon.

Hugs and prayers for you. God bless!
