Finishing What I Started

So here's something that you might not have noticed about me.
But then again, maybe you have...

I'm the world's worst finisher.

It's true. It seems that no matter what I do, I have the tendency to leave some little detail unfinished. I like to call it my signature style. My family just calls it my annoying little habit.

Take this closet for example.

This is the closet that I was painting the day I got the terrible horrible very bad no good news. If you look closely, you will note that the wall color is blue.

The wall color of the adjacent (master) bedroom, however?   It's green.  It. has been green since the turn of the century. The other closets in the room were painted white, but this little space was never given a paint job.

It was never given a purpose either.

I have come to realize in my vintage years that closets are a lot like people. If they don't have a purpose, they can become a hot mess. Oh, it might look like an orderly mess, but it's a mess nonetheless.

This little nook was taking on jobs that it just wasn't called to handle. For one thing, it was housing dishes. Now folks, this closet is off a bedroom on the second story of the house. Does that sound like a logical place to store dishes? Why no, it doesn't. Yet there they are.

No matter how much a little bedroom nook might want to be a dish cupboard, that's just not what it was designed to be.

So I pulled every single thing out of that confused little closet and  either purged it or moved it. Then, I gave it a clean shade of Heirloom white.

Better already...

Then, I painted every thing I was bringing into the space the same clean white.  I just think it looks less junky that way.

Then, I gave it a purpose much better suited to it.

You see, my ironing board hangs from the back of that door.  Sorry  Donna Reed, but I like to iron as needed, and I like to do so in the bedroom where the clothes are.  I also like to mend in the bedroom. Unfortunately, my sewing supplies have always lived downstairs.

Near the kitchen.
You know, where the dishes are supposed to be.

Isn't this a much better set up?

No, it's not a whole sewing room, but I'm not a whole seamstress, either. It works for me. I wish I had done it years ago.

Drawers for supplies and fabric.

A space for everything

Some hooks for mending.

And just for fun, some framed pages of Sew Beautiful magazine.
Miss Whimsy happened to be a model in that issue when she was a baby.

I have a few more finishing touches to go but as you might expect,
I'm still not finished.

*****

And that's all for me. I have some Baby Cheeks and Sugar Lips to attend to before the day is done.  You see, a certain Man of the House is coming home today. He's been out of town all week enjoying the blessing of  work.  That's right folks, the recent chapter in the Life of Sir Lotsa Hair did indeed end with a new job as many of you suspected. I guess you could say that He has found a whole new purpose too, one perfectly suited to his design.

Oh I almost forgot...I had to laugh at your thoughts on the resurrected lizard. I DEFINITELY thought of that too, haha. Can you imagine?

My house closets are all nooks, and I am sad to say my Christmas dishes reside in my bedroom! I purge things quite often, and lots of times I wind up having to replace something I 'purged'. Oh well. xo But your sewing nook looks adorable. xo

Debbie said...

Just for you, Barb, I'll confess that my Christmas dishes are in a closet in a bedroom here too. I have decided that that's OK because I only drag them out once a year.

HA!!! You are funny like I am funny... same closet, same lack of FINISHING completely. We are both working on it. :)

I just went to Lowe's to FINSIH what the painters and roofers need next week to do all the repairs from hail damage. I am really proud of myself right now!!

Keep at it, and so will I!!!

Well sugar lips your closet looks great! So clean and purposeful (is that a word?)...I love it. I REALLY need to paint my bedroom closet but I just can't make myself empty it out. Can't wait to see all of the rest of your projects.

So happy you're back blogging.

Debbie, you always make me smile:-) Dont feel bad...I have dishes stacked in a bathroom cabinet. Love what you did to the closet. I haven't seen the walls in any of our closets since we moved in. I hope you are doing well:-) I've been missing visiting you.

Well, my master closet is one shade of green while the rest of the room is another shade of green. Closets are so low on the totem pole of to do's around here too. I do love what yours has become though. Very nice! I hope you enjoy your time with the Mr. So glad things are looking up again!

If I started to put things where they really belonged, I wouldn't have a clue where anything is. But I do like your new nearly sewing room a lot. Did you really find a home in the kitchen for all those dishes? You know, you are leaving a lot out of this story. I'll try being patient.

I love the re-do! It is perfect. I like it all white and then the storage you have put in there and on the ways.

Ooooh. I like the part that you are not a whole sewer. I can identify. Where is the paper you sew on? You have way more thread than I do. I only have black and white. My eldest told me she doesn't need an iron. If she does, she uses her flat iron. Heaven help me.

Debbie~ So GLAD you are back finishing what you started and happy your hubby has a new job suited for him!

Your tidy, purposeful closet put all mine to shame...We are sadly lacking closet/storage space so I would be happy find extra dish storage anywhere I could :)

Knitty said...

It used to drive my hubby crazy that I had things where they would fit, not where he thought they belonged. Now that the boys are grown and on their own, there is more room and things have migrated to more logical areas. Downsizing helps too, which is what I've done recently with fabric. There are three boxes of it in my car while I find someone who can use it. Hopefully it won't be there much longer.

Debbie, like you I have stored items in places that made no sense whatsoever!!

As for you closet; it looks great to me, and if I leave something a bit unfinished I just say that it needs some "tweaking"!

I do hope you will enter my Giveaway of Velvet Pumpkins from Love Fest!

Your closet looks like all of my favorite things~ organized, defined purpose, uncluttered and clean! I've been working on that very same thing, but have little to show for it thus far.
So happy that your husband is back at work. That is a blessing!
AND happy to see you blogging. Now if I could motivate myself to do that too...

Congratulations! I am so happy about the new job and your sparkling, fab, sewing closet. Although I think it makes perfect sense to have worked your heart out on this timely project, there is something so romantic to us westerners to have a southern gal friend with an upstairs butler's pantry! Enjoy this weekend with your so marketable guy with all that hair....

Love the closet. it makes so much more sense and it looks so great!

Well, you know me. A closet is no where big enough for all my sewing paraphernalia, but this does look gorgeous!

BTW, now I need to go through all my back issues of Sew Beautiful to see if I can find Miss Whimsey! LOL! I know how old she is and I started heirloom sewing and smocking a couple of years earlier when MY Miss Practical was born. : )

I wish we had a "spare" closet downstairs. I'd love to keep my Holiday linens in one spot (tea towels, hand towels and table cloths). We have only one small coat closet in the entry, and need it as a coat closet.

Maybe on your trip north to visit your DC daughter sometime, you could take a detour and help me out. LOL!

Good job as usual Debbie!

Cheers!

Yea!!! So happy for your hubby's new job. Love how you tied in the theme of finding your purpose with that closet redesign. Which, btw, is perfect. What a great idea! And, hey, you actually finished it. That calls for celebration! :)

I loved this, and I have to say that I thought the closet looked just fine before. But it does make sense to use things in close proximity. Maybe I ought to rethink my decorations closet. I have all the holidays upstairs when they actually take place downstairs. It's just that the closet up there is SO much bigger and can house lots of magpie stuff.

I do love what you did, though, and it makes pefect sense.

I also love the fact that Mr. Hair Explision (is that the right moniker???) got a job!!! I knew it!!! I knew it!!! God is awesome, and so is my friend Debbie and her DH.

Love you...

XO,

Sheila

Great job on the closet! I think you and I must be "cousins", because I'm the same way about finishing projects. My closets aren't organized very well. I like the open the door or drawer and throw it in method. :)
I'm so glad things worked out for your husband and he found a new job so quickly. Thank God for that.
I had forgotten about your "sugar lips" scrub. I'm going to try it. My face really needs it. Thanks for the tip.
Hugs,
Babs

Ooooh, I love a place for everything ... and everything in its place. If only I could say I'd achieved it! (I'm not quite through moving the dishes from the bedroom closet on the second floor. -- BUSTED!) You've inspired me yet again. Now if I can just get/stay home long enough to accomplish it!

You know I'm thrilled about the new job. I hope it's going well.

Debbie, I think you are much more organized than you lead us to believe. This "sewing" closet is such a great idea, and it looks so clean and organized. How wonderful to know exactly where to go to the right fabric, thread, etc. You clever girl. Soooo glad he got a job, and sooo glad it sounds like it's something he likes. Of course, God's plan and hand were there all along. laurie
