Biscuits in the Bathroom

So I've been trying to makeover my kitchen table and chairs, but I'm not making a lot of progress.  For one thing, the weather hasn't been cooperative. Like the rest of the country, springtime seems to be playing hide and seek with Dixie.

For another thing, I'm not thrilled about the table. What I'd really like is to find an old farmhouse table to makeover, something with big old farmhouse legs like the one I did for The Practical One last year.

Unfortunately, my farmhouse table money has quite literally
gone down the toilet.

. In case you didn't notice, it's leaking...

Apparently in her travels from powder room to deck to garage and back again, Little Miss Powder Room Toilet ended up a a wee bit cracked.  I had no choice but to make yet another trip to the local home improvement store to replace her. A small matter, you say. How expensive can a toilet be?

If you're looking for a basic white toilet, not very.

Unfortunately, I'm not looking for a basic white toilet. Nooooo... I'm looking for a specific shade of off white called biscuit.

That's because the house with the big fat '80s kitchen also came complete with 3.5 big fat '80s bathrooms, and big fat '80s bathrooms were outfitted in  biscuit, bone, almond, or whatever name the big- haired decorating diva of the day decided to call that spin of the color wheel.

Honestly '80s people, what were we thinking? Did the words harvest gold and avocado not sound an alarm?

Apparently not, since my house  like many others of the era came complete with with semi-permanent fixtures which are nearly impossible to match.

I don't want to match them.
 I don't want a biscuit toilet.

I want a simple, white toilet. Considering the toilet's job description, I don't want to spend a huge amount  of money on it, either.  I don't care about dual flushers and elongated seats with self closing lids. With no apologies to the environmentalists out there, I don't even care how much water it uses. The toilet in question is rarely used.

Unfortunately, I can't change out the toilet in that room unless I also change out the sink. Don't tell me to try it. I tried it. We bought a white toilet, but it looked stupid so we took it back. Then, I went all over town looking for a biscuit colored one with no success. Apparently, you have to special order biscuit colored toilets. You pay for that big haired '80s look, too. They cost at least a hundred dollars more than a comparable white one.

For a toilet that I would eventually want to replace anyway
 because, well, it's biscuit.

For the price of one bathroom biscuit, I could have purchased a white one and a pedestal sink had I known I would need to. Since I didn't know, I  tiled around the existing vanity. The pedestal sink option is no longer on the table.   .

I guess I could cough up a little more money and replace the vanity top and sink, thus freeing one (half) bathroom from biscuit bondage. Of course, a new sink would  necessitate a new faucet. It would most likely destroy the  surrounding wallpaper to get the old one out as well. If I strip the wallpaper, I have to fix the sheet rock behind it. That's the reason the wallpaper was put up to begin with.  Now folks, I was planning to do all of that. I just wasn't planning to do it right now.

Right now, I was planning to address the table and chairs.
And then, I was planning to do nothing for a while.

So last night, that's exactly what I decided to do:. Nothing... for a while.

After a good night's sleep, I made the bold decision to continue doing nothing for a while.  Since the water has been sucked out of the soggy biscuit, it's not an emergency. I am going to take a week or two to figure out what I want to do. Visitors will just have to visit the Siberian Crathroom should the need arise.

And just for good measure, I decided to yak this most recent adventure abroad and throw myself on the mercy of good advice.

So, what would you do?

And is anyone else out there suffering from the biscuit bathroom blues?

Oh girl, you need a little vacation not just a night of rest. You have been so busy physically and it sounds like emotionally as well.

What about paint? You know people paint their kitchen counter tops all of the time now. Becky over at Buckets of Burlap just painted hers and they look wonderful. Is that an option? I know it's probably a different material but I am sure there is something out there for bathroom vanity change up without actually changing it out.

Can't wait to hear what you do.

Rest friend rest.

Oh, girl. It is like a long, winding, almost never ending row of dominoes when you first open the Pandora's box of renovation. Have you checked your local ReStore?? We have a place that people donate their old stuff when they are remodeling (it goes to help Habitat for Humanity). You might try that. I think doing nothing for awhile is a fine idea!! blessings ~ tanna

I feel your pain, Debbie. I have found that whenever I'm looking for something specific, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. So frustrating!

The only thing I can think of is to maybe have a garage sale and use that money to offset the cost of the bathroom remodel. Who knows? You might be able to get a new farmhouse table to boot! :)

Well, I HAD to click on your post title when I saw it in my Reader! I thought at first maybe you were using a toaster oven in the bathroom for some reason. Nothing's ever easy when redoing a house, is it?? My goodness, you have had a TIME! I vote you Do Nothing until All Is Revealed.

gosh, i really thought we were going to have biscuits in the bathroom. i was going to bring the apple butter. nuts. ( :

sorry to hear of your going-on's. we have a place called Ollie's - sometimes they have stuff like that. maybe another housewares company? i wonder? have you tried like e-bay or amazon? i could ask the hubby he is creative like that. i hope it goes smooth & quick for ya.

I guess we never anticipated how true the phrase "you give a mouse a cookie" would turn out. Can't believe it. What about your idea to change one of the other toilets and put the new one in say, the crathroom? I really don't have a good solution for you because you know my half bath woes. Maybe when we see it Saturday we can brain storm a good solution.
For now I vote you do nothing. Just rest.

I was so busy admiring that farmhouse table, Debbie, that I didn't pay much attention to the toilet. I can so relate to your perils with this remodeling, when we were remodeling it seems it was one thing right after another. I promise it will end soon, and guess what something else will pop up demanding your attention, isn't it nice to be so needed! ~smile~ Do what I have done, take a break, with two aspirin, put a Walton's DVD on and enjoy!

Wishing you and your dear family a most blessed Easter.
Hugs,
Sue

I would wait for a sale on a sink and then change them both out! Especially if you won't be having overnight guests. I do think the hair products need to keep those big do's up wreaked havoc with the brain! Happy and Blessed Easter to you and your family. xo

No, I am suffering from 90s slate blue issues. I have a grandson who will not use the bathroom because "it's blue!" He even shudders as if the mere idea is repulsive. Sigh. The sink is stainless steel...yes! So I do feel your pain, but would not spend the extra to replace the color I don't want in the first place. And one thing is certain...one thing always leads to another!

Do you have a Habitat store nearby? They often have this kind of stuff - people donate when they are remodeling, etc. It would be inexpensive.

I love the idea of the pedestal sink but I understand about not spending more money and more effort on tile and drywall.

I guess I'd try to find an inexpensive bisquit for the bathroom, and make it work. Especially if that room isn't used very often.
Just my advice from having to live on a tight budget.

It is not nice to chuckle at the travails of another.

However, I laughed only because I understand your decorating *angst*. Do you know that my kitchen still isn't finished? Some is due to our procrastination, some due to hold-ups with manufacturers and installers, some due to winter weather delays...

So, I get it.

And, I totally get the color thing. I had the hardest time deciding between the particular shade of bronze that I wanted for the kitchen faucet. (There were like 7 to choose from - seriously!)

Anyway, I agree with you - sometimes the best thing is to take a rest and re-group.

(For the record, if you can live with biscuit, great. I'm afraid it would bug me to death, and I'd end up paying for the ever-expanding bathroom explosion just because I wanted everything WHITE!)

Oh I feel your pain...one redo always seems to lead to another.
Close the door and place an out-of-order sign on it for a month...or two :) and take a mini-vacay at home! Heading over to see your reveal.

We have a yellow toilet I not sure why but as long as it works I don't care about the colour.

The color that weirded me out was the pink sink, bathtub and toilet.

Things seem to be snowballing... I inherited a yellow tub and toilet (with "updated" ivory "soft seat") in my 1956 house, I'm not in any position to give advice:@)

We have a grey tub and toilet in our master bath. When I chose it (yes I did!) I thought it was sooo cool because it WASN'T white. Now, with the aging eye sight, I wish it were. Oh well .... when we hit the lottery ....

So you have plenty of company Debbie! Now relax and just enjoy doing nothing. You deserve it!

Cheers!

I totally get this. We are blessed with biscuit in two bathrooms and gray in another. I so long for white fixtures. I have no advice. Only sympathy.

Take your time and then move forward. I think I would be thinking of how I could add more tile where the old cabinet is and add that "white" pedestal sink and "white" toilet. If that's what you really want, you may not be satisfied with anything else. Just look at it as an investment in your home that will surely help the overall resale value. Not that I am advocating moving but it always helps to think of home improvements that way. Now if I could just use the same logic to get my hubby to redo our deck railings outside! :)))

oh boy! Do I ever get this one! I have a remodeled kitchen, in part because my microwave died and there was NO replacement for that wall space. i also was perilously close to needing a new oven and dishwasher, so I now have a stainless steel redone kitchen, including the sink and faucets. It's just a matter of time before the toilets have to go, and I just know that the fit to the floor tiles is NOT going to be the same!!! Sometimes a good ole rental condo sounds tempting!

Well, since you asked...

IF the two-tone thing wouldn't bother you in the crathroom, I'd take your sister's advice (for now) and switch out the toilets. But I'm with Mary: I'd try to remove the vanity cabinet and get creative with the tile -- maybe like a tile "rug" under a pretty WHITE pedestal sink. Since it's a half bath, I'm thinking it's probably too small to handle a second "rug" anywhere else in the space, but since you already know how to remove individual tiles, you might consider a few well-placed insets that tie in the "rug" under the new sink.

OR keep your eyes open for tile on clearance, ReStore, etc. and -- after several WEEKS (MONTHS?) of rest -- tackle that sucker. You've already proved you can come out the winner! Good luck. I've been there, and it's painful! But I'm one to wait until I can afford what I want and then do it...

OK, I'm going out on a limb here ... I may the only creature on the planet who kinda-sorta misses those almond and avacado fixtures. (It's OK to laugh. Really.)

I'm the LAST person to consult about anthings crafty ... but I once knew a fellow who spray-painted his bathroom fixtures with this pebble-tech looking stuff.
Thought he was out of his mind, but in the end it actually looked sorta smart!

Oh my, Debbie! After all the work on the kitchen, now this! I think you really want white, don't you? Since the white toilets are so much cheaper, wait for a sale on the white sink/ vanity combo. You won't be happy with the biscuit in the bathroom. Now just forget about it for awhile. Happy Easter blessings sent to you.

I didn't read the comments so I may be giving the same advice as all the above but I know I would not buy a biscuit toilet if I wanted white. I would put in a white one and ignore the sink until I could replace it ~ or ~ and I hate to suggest more tile work, but could you take out the vanity and just cut out the tiles and finish the tile to the wall so you could put in a pedestal? I do have one pedestal sink and frankly, I miss the storage so I know I would just ignore the sink until I could get a new one. I tell you, once you start...it's that whole if you give a mouse a cookie decorating thing that I have had going on at my house too.
Forget it for now, look at your beautiful kitchen and have a blessed Easter!

Debbie, I would wait and do it all the way I wanted if the bathroom isn't a necessity at the moment. Patience is virtue, right? LOL

Oh I am laughing and also hitting myself on the back. In the 80's we built our own home..yes I picked out all those colored toilets and so I can sooooooooooo see them in my mind. I too wish I had just stayed put..that house would have been paid off over 15 years ago...oh me, was I dumb...so colored 80's toilets or not...I would trade to have them back.
Enjoy your journey...it makes me smile and I can't help but cheer you on...Go Girl!!

We are suffering from the biscuit bathroom blues, too! We are desperately trying to find surround tile in "Mayan White" which is a biscuit color and discontinued. NOT an easy thing to find! You thought your stuff was just about to come to a close, and now this! I'm so sorry!

I hope you can turn a blind eye and just relax this weekend! Try to have a happy Easter!

Hi Debbie.... you poor thing...It doesn't stop does it???
If you want white, then I'd put in the white toilet and wait until you can find a white sink you can afford.
OR.... Google up painted finishes for your sink...I'm sure you'll find you can change colours this way....
Rest and slow breathe for a while...
Happy Easter...
Blessings..

Oh, I feel your pain...Count me in as an owner of a biscuit colored toilet and sink from the 80's in the master bath. Now, I had the 80's blue in the guest bath. I switched out the toilet, but had the blue tub and tile surround...So, I had it painted, they did an acid wash and then a white paint...Debbie it is perfect, you would never know and it has a 15 year guarantee. Now if they can change the color of a tub, why not a toilet? it was $450 for a whole tub and tile, what could it cost for a toilet? Can't be that much! so, google "service magic" and put in paint tub and see who calls and ask if they will paint a toilet (I am sure you will have to take it out to have it painted) There ya go my 2 cents worth. Have a happy Easter and know that this too shall pass...Now, where is the warm weather, it is cold even in Florida

I will have to take photos of the full and half baths at our cottage. The previous owners squeezed in a full bath in a narrow room with odd angles. The walls are panels with the design in them, supposedly marble. Oy!

The half bath is sandwiched between our bedroom and the tiny room where a stacking washer and dryer and the furnace are located. The walls there are not only preprinted crappola, they are textured. The sink/vanity is faux marble, looking like chocolate-vanilla marble ice cream that I would swirl in the bowl as it melted. The frame on the mirrored medicine cabinet is baroque, if plastic can be baroque. The toilet is....take a breath....dark brown.

You really should come visit me there just to feel better about your home. Lol! When we first bought the cottage, we made structural improvements and simple decor changes. It really needs overhauling but hubby is concerned about some new structural issues that have arisen. Until those are addressed, we live with the lights dimmed.

Well I know after tackling the kitchen that I wouldn't want to tackle another big project if I had the choice!

One of my neighbors had her vanity, sink and bathtub re-finished/painted. It was last year so I forget the details but it looks really nice. I guess you could get a new toilet and refinish the sink/vanity area. Don't know how much that costs but it seemed pretty painless and quick.

Why do you need a pedestal sink? There are so many vanities that come with sinks that have a shallow profile if space is an issue. But yes you would have to buy a new faucet.

I guess if it were me I'd change out the toilet to white so that the bathroom could be used and wait until I had saved up the money to do something about the other fixtures.

OK, MY time to vote....:)
I say, since it's a bath not used right now, don't replace with Biscuit...wait until you can do both commode and sink. You will be much happier, I just know.
Now, I did my kitchen in ALMOND in the '70's...(same as Biscuit)...over the years, the stove and fridge died so we replaced them both with black, which I love to the moon and back...dishwasher is also black...
the only hint of Almond left...the double sink. We kept thinking we'd replace it with stainless...just never did. the sink is such a pale almond, no one ever notices it anymore....not even me.:))

Ok...just having purchased new toilets, I can completely relate. Who knew there were so many choices?
What to do with yours? Ok...here goes, have you considered spray painting? I know...crazy idea, but it seems that spray paint is used for just about everything! Maybe there's one out there that's for covering things like toilets...Perhaps it would last long enough until you're ready for a change!
{I had to do a few touch-ups on my current toilets so that our house could "show" well for resale. The paint has held up really well - no issues!}
