Because It Doesn't Have To Be Black Or White

Ugh.
Here I go again.

I was all set to yak abroad my color of the year and tell you the little story that inspired it, and for the life of me, I can't get the post on the page.  Oh, I'm getting words on the page... lots of them in fact. I just can't seem to spill the beans without making a whole pot of chili.  And so?

 I. Post. Nothing.

Can anyone relate?

A favorite blogger who shall remain nameless  has suggested that maybe, just maybe, I'm something of a perfectionist. Though that would probably surprise the dust bunnies living under my bed, she's not completely out in left field, only instead of a straight-up perfectionist, I'm more of what you call an extremist.

As colors go, I'm more of a passionate red, bright yellowor hot pink.  My neutrals are either black or white.

It's sad but true. In Debbie Land, it's either freezing or boiling. (Feel free to take that comment literally, by the way.)

I'm either Richard Simmons or Henry the VIII.

Sue Ann or Roseanne

OK, strike that one. I'm proud to say that I have never been a Rosanne.  ( I'm not exactly Sue Ann Nivens either, but that's not relevant.)

But really...
Don't you think there's some space in between?

Yeah, I think so too.
This year, I'm going to figure out a way to embrace more of it.

I'm not just doing it for myself, either. If you think it's frustrating for me, imagine being married to a pendulum for 30 years.  Therefore, for the sake of all concerned, I have decided to put my focus this year on the practice of moderation. Life doesn't have to be an all or nothing life, after all. It just needs some healthy balance.

That's why balance is my word of the year.  And the color I picked to go along with it?

It's taupe.

Yes, taupe. Don't even try to tell me that taupe doesn't have possibilities. It does. Taupe isn't the same as beige or cream or buff. I would never choose them for a color of the year. For one thing, they're boring. For another, I like to wear my color of the year, and I can't wear beige, cream, or buff.

Taupe, on the other hand, has just enough depth to distinguish it from the creams of the world.  Taupe has a personality; it's just a quiet one. It works and plays well with others, too.  It can be both a neutral and a pop of color.  Oh sure, it doesn't pop like red, but who says a pop of color has to scream at you? Why can't it just sort of converse?

That's what taupe is to me, a warm and conversational kind of color, not too loud, but with enough hue to keep it from being bland. Taupe is a color with perfect balance, and that's why it's my 2014 color of the year.

Ta da!!

****

And now that I've finally spilled the beans,  I can get around to visiting.
Yes,  I'm oddball enough to admit that I was afraid to read blogs  lest someone choose the word first and think I was a big, old, copycat.

So... even if you've already blogged it:
What's your goal for 2014?
Inquiring minds want to know.

I wish I could blame the other typos on it. LOL

You do know that Blog Land has been rather less *colorful* without you, right?! So glad to have you back!

I so love this post. It's just so...YOU!

I love the word you have chosen. Balance is a great one. And taupe is the perfect color for that theme. Yes, there is lots of room in between black and white, up and down, perfect and lousy...ahem.

And those spaces in between are where the see-saw stops and balances just right. I know that God will work this out in your life, and I can't wait to watch the journey unfold.

My word? C'mon over and find out what God gave me. It's not a *comfortable* word for me. And, as a goal, ouch. But, God will find a way, He always does. Didn't pick a color, but I suppose if I had, it would have to be YELLOW. (Also a color that I cannot wear well...)

XO

(Glad your word wasn't ECRU...just sayin')

Hi Debbie!

Welcome Back!!! I saw your previous post (which I haven't had a chance to comment on yet) but thought I'd just jump in right here. I love this post, and it sounds just like me so much of the time. I always say I'm a perfectionist wannabe. I'll have to remember extremist. :)

Finding balance is a hard thing for many people to do, so I understand where you're coming from (so does my family). :-D I totally agree with Sharon that blogland has been less "colorful" without you around -- we're so glad you're back. I think taupe is a very classic color -- easy to wear and easy on the eye. This was a good choice.

I look forward to following along with you this year, my friend. Happy 2014!

Big Hugs,

Denise

Taupe... it's perfect!!

I love this blog Debbie, and you have been missed. Balance is such a difficult thing to maintain, and you said it better than I could have. It isn't 'either'... 'or'... somew=times 'taupe' is the best of all!! :)

sometimes proofing my own comments might be the best thing too! :(

ok, i have to see what you will do with taupe? it is ok. maybe it is just the way it looks when you read the word taupe - the way it rolls of your tongue? not sure ... show us how it will be used please. ( :

sorry to hear you are having trouble posting. i was having trouble making it not centered. i wanted it other ways but blogger/goggle had another plan. ha. ha!!

Balance & taupe, huh? I think they're perfectly suited for one another. As always, you always manage to make me smile with your humor. I love it!

Balance and taupe? I feel better now somehow. You are so not a taupe person. I'm not buying it. Balance...I would like more of that myself.

I don't do the word thingy, but at least I now know the word for me - it's extremist! (not the word I'd choose, just the perfect description of what I am)
I always knew that perfectionist was not quite right - that whole dust bunny thing, so extremist is a great descriptor.
I'm so glad you're back to put words to the things I can't.

Balance is a great word. Can't wait to see how it works out:-)

Well balance and taupe certainly go together I think. Pretty much my whole house is painted in taupe. And then I add pops of burgundy, olive green and gold. The taupe kind of balances out all the rich colors...warm and friendly too. I need to have more balance in every area of my life. Hope you had a good day!

Balance is a great word. Taupe? I've seen some that is okay, but I certainly can't wear it! I'll look forward to what you do with your color for this year!

Why is it that so many of us struggle with balance? I'm looking forward to learning along with you this year!

Taupe...Geez, I don't think you had to worry about anyone else stealing your color of the year lol! Balance....Hum, interesting thought...I can't do it...I'm not sure I want to, I must be some kind of an adrenalin junky, of course it makes it much easier since I live alone and it does not affect anyone else's life. Well, I am looking forward to reading about your balanced year....Of course I look forward to reading anything you write!

A good word and color, very calming for women our age:@) I have to chuckle at the perfectionist comment. I remember thinking once "I can't be a perfectionist, I don't do any thing right"... and then it hit me:@)

I think this is the perfect color and word for you. Just a great "balance" all the way around. The color is sophisticated without being boring. I would say a timeless classic. Sort of like pearls.

I don't pick a color but have decided to add more FUN to my life. I'd like to try some new activities and bring back some old ones. Spend a little more time with people. Go out a little more. I hope you'll be able to join me!!

REALLY happy, happy, happy to have to back blogging. I've missed you.

Balance - I'm with you on that on that one! But Taupe? I don't know what it is about that color, but it puts me OUT of balance pretty fast! Probably because I don't wear it well -- but I can't wait to see how you use it this year!

From one "extremist" to another... I hope 2014 is a fantastic year for you! I have a feeling it's going to be a memorable one -- in a good way!

Yey-hooray! Welcome back, my yakky friend! Love that you are online and available again. Sure did miss ya! Now - as to your word - excellent choice. I'm trying to get some of that, too. But, my word (which I'll be debuting later this week so do check back) is probably something I need to get in gear before the balance will come. Now, as to taupe - love that, too. Never gave it much a mind til recently when I came into possession of an amazing taupe sweater that looks grand with so many pieces in my wardrobe. Loving it now - and noticing that I've been sitting on taupe slipcovers in the living room for six years! Hmmmmm . . . selected because it "went with everything" - go figure. Looking forward to seeing how you "taupe-out" all over this year with buckets of balance to make life pop for us in Blogland.
Joy!

I am just so happy you are blogging again. I like your word, works for me, too, I do suffer from all or nothing personality disorder. So did my mother. It is rough, no joke. Taupe is an interesting color. It goes with everything. xo

I happen to be a taupe lover, so there.

I can also find myself swinging one way or another, unable to find the middle of the matter. Hopefully, I won't find the middle of the road, however, as that is where you end up getting run over.

I love that you're back in blogland.

While I have been trying to challenge myself each year (zip lining, snorkeling, visiting a 4th continent, etc,), I like the idea of moderation, and I love taupe! So perhaps THIS year, I should just work on me, and the house!

Cheers and
Welcome back!

Well I love your word and your color. On my decorating job I am using Virtual Taupe in their Master Bedroom and bath, so I would say there is a lot of potential. Yes a spot of color makes it pop. Thanks for sharing and spilling the beans, even if I am late to the party.

Debbie, Happy New Year to you~ I've missed your witty commentary! I can relate, I have all or nothing syndrome. I definitely need more balance or taupe in my life :)

I'm totally down with taupe, Debbie. I'm a taupe advocate from way back. Many of my clothes are taupe, and I just add a bright color to bring that neutral background alive. Taupe looks great against brown skin as well as lighter skin tones!

I'm ashamed to say I really haven't established any goals for 2014. My husband and I are working on getting healthier, so I guess that's a goal. Maybe I'll think about it a little more and get back to you! :-) Have a great Wednesday!!

Well now that you have asked....I want to redo my living room. A few new things I would like to purchase but mostly I will re-do with different colors or add a touch of different color to my existing decor. Money wise I need to visit the possibilities of adding a touch here and there for this year. But that is my goal is to re-do my living room! Happy re-doing! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

I read this two days ago, but couldn't think what I wanted to say about it. When I saw the word taupe, I thought "nope!" (wink) I've never been a fan of the brown or tan family. To me they are boring, and when people decorate with them, especially tan, it's a "safe" color, because they are fearful of using a color.

You are right - taupe is a little different, and warmer. I'm sure you are going to prove to us that it is a fabulous color!

Years ago I "had my colors done" a color maven chose the colors best for me from my skin tone and hair color. Guess what? Taupe is one of the colors! Still, I never wore it much, or if I had something in taupe, I would always reach for another color item in my closet. My hair was blond back then and taupe was nice with it, but now it is gray and would probably clash with taupe!

I look forward to seeing how you make believers of us with your taupe color this year!

Well taupe looks different in different light! Love the idea of balance - I always strive for that.

My goal is to get my house projects done and my house sold and move on to other things this year!

Great color choice! I love it because it's a neutral plus a warm tone. I tend to use it a lot, perhaps it should have been my color too! Haha!
