Sweating the Shingles and Other Small Stuff

Just a quickie this morning as I try to juggle Blogville and Momville at the same time. Miss Whimsy came home over the weekend for a break before she starts her next school year.

Which is her senior year...
Really!

Didn't we just create that freshman dorm room for her about two days ago?
Yes, I think we did.

Aside from  trying to scale Mt. Whimsy, we're also dealing with issues of the medical sort.  The poor thing brought home a case of shingles.  We have no idea what could have prompted it since she wasn't really under a lot of stress this summer, unless it was the stress of doing her first really grown up job in the form of an internship, and trying to do it well.

At any  rate, she is home and healing. We're pretty blessed that she hasn't that much of the characteristic pain that goes with it. Her problems are more of the side effect sort.  As I mentioned in THIS POST (a long, long, time ago), Miss Whimsy does enjoy a good milking.  Between the information packet that came with her prescriptions and some googling she did for extra credit, she has discovered quite a few of them. By all accounts, she has decided to have every, shingle, one.

Oh that girl...
What would we do without her?

In more crafty news, I've been working on a bit of this and that.  You might recall that I dubbed the summer of 2013 the summer to Sweat the Small Stuff.  Much of it has been cleaning and organizing and not all that blog worthy, but today, I'll share an easy peasy little candlestick project.

It started out as a set that looked like this.

I got them some time back at an estate sale and paid $3.00 for the pair.  I wanted something tall, dark, and handsome for my fall/winter mantels, and I loved their height and shape. Unfortunately, they were designed for a tall taper.

Honestly? I thought they looked kind of dorky that way.

So I attached a little terracotta saucer (Hobby Lobby, about $2.00/pack.) with some E-6000 epoxy  and made it more substantial.  Then, I darkened the finish with some Rustoleum Metallic in antique brass and dry brushed some  espresso craft paint.

Don't you think it looks better this way?

Please say yes, because that's the way I'm leaving it.

Of course, when I set about to do the matching one, I had a little bit of a mishap.

Ugh!!
The whole point was to have a pair of them.

Frankly, I don't know how it happened since I propped it up the same way that I did the first one. It wasn't the least little bit windy that day, either. Nonetheless, it broke.   Of course, I also noticed the scented calling card of Good Time Charley, the roaming neighborhood spaniel in the vicinity, too ...

Oooh that dog!
Him, I could do without...

 Oh well...

The breaks were clean ones so I will try to glue it all together and create a Frankenstick.

I've done some other small stuff, but it will have to wait for another day.  Today, I have a daughter to baby.  And then, there's this tablescape challenge that I'm planning to join too...

Sure hope "Miss Whimsey" feels better soon ... For both your sakes!

As for the candlestick...have you thought of keeping the second one a bit shorter? They could go together on one side of your mantel, table top or shelf. Just a suggestion ...

Cheers!

Poor daughter! Hope she feels better very soon. Love the candlestick transformation, great idea, even if you only have 1 now. Take care - Dawn

I'm so glad things aren't too serious there Debbie. Just bad enough for some movie watching together and a tea party! Best to both of you and your candlestick...

I didn't think the shingles virus even liked anyone under the age of 60 ... poor thing! (...and poor momma!)
Unfortunately, I also run to Google at the first sign of a sniffle. Drives DH nuts, but wonder if we're not being driven to it on some level, since doctors these days seem so driven and hurried and don't spend much time one-on-one. Where's Marcus Welby when we need him?!

Hugs from Phoenix,
Myra

The candlestick looks sooo much better with your magic touch. Love it!

Bless your sweet girl's heart. Shingles, or so I've heard, are no fun at all. And, yes, it does seem like she just got to college two days ago.

Oh dear - I guess I didn't realize that you could have shingles at such a young age. Glad she didn't have the pain that's so notorious with shingles. And, I'll bet you felt better being able to have her home to *baby* her just a bit...

Love the candlesticks - they really look great. And, can't wait for the newest tablescape. It's been awhile since I've been one of the invisible people!

Yikes shingles on a young person, hope she recovers quickly Debbie. Love the addition of the saucer to the candlestick, it does look more substantial with it and the color is great.

I'm glad Miss W. is not in bad pain. Love the candlestick transformation, it looks like it was manufactured that color. I hope you get the other one back together. xo

Sorry about the shingles, but glad to hear it isn't too bad. My niece (also quite young)had that a couple of years ago, and she was miserable! And oh the internet and their wealth of terrifying information. Why do we all run to it to see how bad it really is? haha I do anyway. And the mentioned side effects on the prescriptions is even worse...it is a wonder anyone ever takes anything. Love your new and improved version of the candlestick btw. Hope the rest of your day was good!

Poor Miss Whimsy. I'm so glad she's home so mommy can sooth her and bring her back to health. If that doesn't work, I know the Duchess will be glad to work her magic! Hope she feels better soon.

Your candlestick transformation is awesome. It definitely needed the bigger top and a better color. Didn't you buy another candlestick today? At least you don't have to "transform" it. I can't wait to see where you use them.

Three months after my knee replacement I got the shingles - no day in the park I will tell you. So I hope and pray your dear daughter gets rid of them soon. I too took the antivirus medicine and i do think it helped. Love, sandie

Oh so sorry your daughter has shingles and I hope she feels better soon! I got shingles one year when I was under a lot of stress. The medicine helped me a lot.

Ugh sorry about the candlestick!! Hopefully you can put it back together again and when you paint it no one will know.

I am sorry for Miss Whimsey. I had shingles a few years ago, and had no idea what brought it on...I didn't have very many and once I got the antivirus I had no more pain at all.

Enjoy your time in Momville...we'll be here when you get back!

I do like your project and I do hope you can fix the broken one!

Well, the one candlestick looks great! Hope you can fix the other one. Praying your girlie has a speedy recovery. I thought only old people got shingles!

Oh dear, I hope the shingles pass quickly by for Miss Wihimsy. Poor baby!
Your candle holder looks wonderful after it's transformation and yes, much better with the chunky candle. I know you'll get the other one repaired and transformed as well.

Oh no, I hope your daughter brushes off the shingles pretty fast. I cannot believe she will be a senior already. Time sure does fly. Sorry about the broken candle holder, Debbie. Too bad cause they both look good....Christine

A sick daughter AND a "sick" candlestick? So sorry to hear both! At least Miss Whimsy is right where she belongs so she can get some rest and get ready for her final year of college *Gasp!* As for the candlestick, the tall, dark, and handsome one looks great -- and I know you won't let Sorry Charley get the upper hand; the "sick" one will look great soon, too. I have confidence in you!

Sorry to hear Miss Whimsy is having a rough time with shingles. Everyone I know that has had them says they are quite uncomfy! Hope she is feeling better soon and wish her the best senior year possible! Condolences on the candlestick....that is such a me thing to do :(

Oh No! The shigles AND a broken candlestick. I sure hope Miss Whimsy is better very soon. (No! It is not her Sr. year! That's not possible. I agree - it wasn't very long ago you were moving her.) I love the color you painted that candlestick, and how clever of you to use the flower pot saucer on it. It looks like it belongs on there. I am sure by the time you glue the other one back together and then put the paint on it, it will look just as great as this one, and you will have a pair. laurie
P.S. Your Sun. post is wonderful again. Oh my! That shoe contraption does look like torture, and you cracked me up with your comment about your tongue. I really wish you'd just put all of your Sun. posts in book form as a devotional book. I'd buy a copy. laurie

Soooo sorry Ms. Whimsy has the shingles. That stuff is scary. Evan keeps telling me we need to get the vaccine; I keep putting it off, but Ms. Whimsy is so YOUNG! Hope she is feeling MUCH better soon. I'm sure having her Momma to tend her makes it as good as it can be.

I have no doubt you can glue that busted candlestick back so no one would ever guess it had looked like Humpty Dumpty. And, you are ABSOLUTELY right about the proportions of the candles looking much better with the Debbie-modification. Great job. blessings ~ tanna

Shingles? Good heavens! I hope that it was discovered early enough to nip in the bud. Poor thing!

Yes, your candlestick looks much better in its altered state. Hope that you can fix the broken one.

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon, I don't know anything about shingles, but hope she is soon feeling her best!
Our youngest son is beginning his senior year in college too...yes, where did the time go? His "stuff" is in the garage waiting on his return from is internship. It will all be loaded up and taken to his new "home" in a few days.
I love the candlesticks you've redone. And yes, I like the little addition you made. I'll bet you can fix the broken one with a bit of E6000, don't you think? If it's just "sitting" somewhere pretty, perhaps it will be alright.

Love the candlesticks! They look fabulous! Do you think you could glue the broken one back with ho glue?

So sorry about the shingles! Bless her heart! My mom had them last year and was miserable for months! Hopefully hers will be gone quickly.
