The Stuff Legends Are Made Of

It's time for another
A Haven For Vee.

That's when we reach back into the blog archives and choose four pictures to turn into note cards.  They don't have to have a theme, but I'm sort of a themey kind of girl.  I'm so themey,  in fact, that I can be somewhat like a dog on a bone.

Perhaps you've noticed...

Keeping that in mind, my theme for this month
should be no surprise.

I'm calling this set
Welcome to Dixie...

Where even the trees have beards

That's just a stereotype, of course.

You don't actually see that many beards in my neck of the woods,
especially the scraggly kind that migrate south of the Chin Peninsula.

It's mainly for the same reason that you don't see a lot of St. Bernards.

When it's 400 degrees in the shade, you don't add fur.

That's what the husband says, anyway, every time I try to convince him to grow one.  Either that, or that beards aren't recommended in his line of work.  It makes you appear less trustworthy, he says...

I say,
Liar, liar, pants on fire.

There are lots of trustworthy men bedecked in facial hair, and he knows it. Every year, millions of American mothers take their children to the mall, point to the dude with the long, white, whiskers, and tell them to go sit on his lap. If that's not trustworthy, I don't know what is.

Personally, I think he's just afraid of the Duchess.

The Duchess's dislike of facial hair is legendary. I never saw my father with so much as a set of side burns. Oh, he tried to grow a mustache one time  It lasted about an hour. She kept telling him to go back and make it smaller until she succeeded in turning him into Adolf Hitler.

I, on the other hand, am what you call a pogonophile. I like a beard. I don't want it to look like shredded wheat or anything, but I like a nicely trimmed one.  That's exactly what Sir Lotsa hair had when I met him, too. I would love to show a picture, but unfortunately he only had it for the first month or so after we started dating.  Then, he met The Duchess...

... who very promptly told him he needed to shave his face.

Which he did.

Mo-therrr!

Oooh, that woman. I don't know what kind of power she wields, but in thirty- plus years, I have not been able to convince him to grow so much as a goatee.  (That part's fine by me, by the way.  When I say a beard, I mean a beard. Not picky much, am I? )

And that's all I have to say about that.
So where do you stand on the subject of facial hair?

****
Oh, and for those who really just came here for the note cards, that's Spanish moss growing on those southern trees. It's pretty legendary, too.  The first one was taken in Savannah, the second over the Ogeechee River,  the third down the road at sunset, and the fourth, of course, in the blue hour.

Hahahahahaha...oh my...laughed so hard that my husband...who has never worn a beard in all the time I've known him...had to come see what the fun was. Then pretty soon he was chuckling, too. Good thing I introduced him to the beard boys last week. He says you just need a duck wandering down Main Street there.

I do like a beard kept nicely trimmed along with hair. My son wears a beard and looks quite fine if I do say so myself.

Back to the photos! Perfection. And I just love the final two for the dramatic colors and contrasts.

I like how you caught the spanish moss in all kinds of light. It's so pretty with the sunlight shining through it.

Oh how I love the blue hour...and living in the South! Beautiful photos and a very fun post! We Southern girls know how to make a party fun, don't we? Hugs!

I don't think there is anything as beautiful as Dixie - and it is not just because I live here.

And I like that beard that is grown really close to the face - like a shadow! Good looking!

hahahahahaha so glad I came by to see your beautiful bearded trees..for 5 years I lived on an island off of the Georgia coast that was covered in these lovely bearded trees...it was a hard lesson to learn that this moss is steeped in redbugs and if you gather it for a wreath company, you will SUFFER!! lesson learned...LOL

Great shots. Love the first one!

First off, love the pictures! And then, I too LOVE a beard, mustache, or goatee DEPENDING...haha. On most guys they are wonderful, but they must be kept trimmed, neat and stylish. But it is very much dependent on the man, his face, etc. LOVE my hubby's goatee. He has only been without his mustache for maybe 3 weeks of our entire 38 years of marriage and I was anxiously waiting the WHOLE time for it to grow back, haha. Enjoyed this Debbie! Have a good day!

I love my husband with a mustache a little goatee. I like a rugged look with a little nerdiness to boot.

Debbie, I love that Savannah street scene -- probably because I love Spanish moss. There's something so enchanting about it...

I also love beards on some men. For years Renaissance Man grew one when he went hunting -- and promptly shaved it before going back to his college administrator job. Only when he left that field was I able to convince him to keep it! He says I like it because it covers up his double chin, (LOL) but I think there's something extra-masculine about a beard-wearing man (as long as it's kept short and tidy).

Sir Lotsa Hair should do whatever it takes to make the Mrs. happy -- not the Duchess. (Just sayin'...)

What a fun post and good theme to the notecards! As far as beards, seems a lot of the men I know wear them, including my husband, Our kids, in their 30s, have never seen him without one.

How cool! I love trees like that! And on the subject of beards - I love them too! DH has a beard and he knows better than to shave it off, LOL. He had to do that once for his job and every time I saw him or kissed him, I got me to giggling. I told him I felt like I was cheating on him because it wasn't him, LOL! Fortunately, he was allowed to grow it back and he's been happily mistaken for Santa Claus for many years!

I never thought of the moss as beards...such pretty trees. I don't care for hubs beard

Gorgeous photos! Quite different from Southeastern Ohio!
My husband used to grow a beard every winter, but he stopped two years ago when it grew in completely white. He says it makes him look like an old man. I say he's even more handsome. But so far, I haven't convinced him.
Sigh.

Ann said...

I am just fine with the groomed mustache on my hubby. He periodically shaves it off...first time he did that our eldest who was 3 at the time, begged him to find it and put it back on! LOL!
He could not, however, ever grow a full beard. He just doesn't have the ability for it. He could, however, grow a fu-Manchu. I saw a pic of him in college with one...Meeeooww! ;)
The inability to grow a full beard has been passed down to his son, as well. None of the men on my side could grow one either. My eldest brother did have a beard...of sorts. It made him look like a red-headed Abe Lincoln. Not real attractive, actually.
Now, as for your notecards...Gorgeous, Debbie! Not only do you have a knack with the English language, you have a good eye for composition! Well done!

Cheers!

Your photos are all so beautiful. I love the Spanish moss dripping on all of the trees. My favorite is the blue hour one.

Not a big facial hair person. My husband had a mustache for a few years when he was younger. I was happy when he shaved it.

My thoughts on Sir Lotsa Hair...People do not understand how much power the Duchess maintains in the family. I'm glad he understands...

You can take Note Cards and make me laugh..what an art.
Oh facial hair, too funny! My mother in law hates it, so guess what suggested? Isn't that horrible? The more she complained the more I like his facial hair! My kids just laughed, it never grew very well...so off it went after a couple of years, to the delight of his mother!

Love these photos!! Especially the blue hour. Such stunning color. I used to like a mustache on a man, not anymore. I am too neurotic about them catching crumbs in the facial hair, I certainly make sure to wax mine! lol ;-) xo

Lorrie said...

HA! Trees with beards, yes, indeed. And beautiful ones at that, in spite of their scraggliness. Love the street scene.
Beards - either you like them or you don't. I like them on other men but my husband has never had one and I don't think I'd recognize him with one.

I got so involved in the beard story I almost forgot the photos, not really, they are absolutely stunning. You should write a book, you have a way of capturing our attention so well. It would be so funny if all of our LOL's were heard on the internet. I am still enjoying yesterday's post, you really nailed the truth.
Enjoy your day.

My hubby grew one last winter and I loved the look of it on him but hated the feel of it on ME! So it went.

Denise at Forest Manor said...

Hi Debbie!

I agree with Sue; I got so involved with the beard story I almost forgot the pictures, as well. :-D

Your pictures are wonderful -- you always capture the blue hour so perfectly. I truly love the majestic live oaks with the Spanish moss -- so quintessentially southern.

Now about the beards; I do like a man with a beard (neatly trimmed) as the other women said. My hubby has worn one for about 24 or 25 years; I think it makes him look distinguished. The one time he shaved it, I thought he looked odd without it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

I enjoyed this post very much, and I posted your previous post to my Facebook page. Have a great day!

Fun,fun, fun!

Gorgeous photos too!

My dad grew a beard when I was a young girl. It looked great on him and he kept it. In the 70's it was a bit shaggyish but later on Mom convinced him to wear it nicely trimmed up. Several years ago it started to get a tad patchy and white in spots so I convinced him to do more of a goatee and it made him look better once again! Aren't you glad I told you that?

Now I am going to tell you that the dear, sweet, talented Melissa Gill who commented earlier and who took those great sunflower photos is my niece. Tim's sister's daughter but I claim her as blood. She's a keeper!

The trees look cool! I like beards as long as they're neatly trimmed and short, not so fond of this long/shaggy/straggly faze it seems guys are into now.

My husband had a beard for the first 38 years I knew him. Then one afternoon when we were doing a jigsaw puzzle he went upstairs and shaved it off and came back downstairs and starting doing the puzzle again. When I noticed it I was SHOCKED. He did keep a mustache though.
I loved his beard. I like beards but not on everyone.

Gina said...

The trees are beautiful! We don't have anything that looks like them up here...that I can think of anyway.
By the way, the whole beard story...thanks for the laugh!

Linda (More Fun Less Laundry) said...

You are hilarious with your descriptions! I definitely do NOT like facial hair on my hubby, although he did have a mustache when I met him! I like the smooth look and feel, and the ONLY gray beard I like is on the fat man in the red suit! Thanks for the laughs. Linda

Oh you have been chuckling over here with that statement "when it's 400 degrees in the shade you don't add fur"
I'm with your mother on not being fond of beards. I can enjoy them once in a while but for the most part I enjoy a clean shaven face.
Oh...I like your notecards, too, btw. I saw a tree covered with Spanish moss for the first time when my daughter and I attended her then boyfriend's/now husband's graduation at Parris Island in South Carolina.

Wonderful note cards and spanish moss is a fascinating plant to me from the north. (Ontario, Can.)
I hope I'm not the only one that will say I'm uncomfortable with beards. (except Santa) We're mostly a family of women and none of the husbands, my father or others ever had a beard.

Goodness, your pictures are gorgeous!! I am partial to a mustache, perhaps if the Duchess had her lips and nose tickled by a few whiskers in the past, she would like them....Oh, I bet that will make her mad!!!LOL, just kidding Duchess!

My stance on facial hair?-- I love it on some men and dislike it on others--I think it is a totally individual thing--Some men are so much more handsome with it and vice versa. I do like it neatly trimmed though--no scraggly stuff for me. Well, unless it's on Jase--smile!

Oh, to have just a smidgen of the power of The Duchess! you had me laughing uncontrollably. I'm not kidding, I had tears in my eyes. Your notecards/photos are beautiful, but your commentary is excellent! Love the way your brain works. laurie

LOL! My husband always has a mustache and sometimes he grows a beard but it's always a very close shadowish one.

Lovely photos! I recognized that first one. I think I've been down that road.

Sharon said...

Hysterical.

*The husband* has had a mustache (a la Sam Elliott) since he was like 18. (When I push it up to look at his lip just for fun, I scarcely recognize him!)

Son #1 has a full beard. Black. And with his fair skin, he really looks like the Scottish genes he's inherited.

And, considering how much in love I am with one certain FURRY beagle, I guess that settles it.

"Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it..."

Yes, apply those lyrics to FACIAL hair!!

just sayin'...

Awesome cards and extremely witty commentary.

I am so late getting to the cards this month, been one of THOSE weeks.

Just read your goodbye post.

I do hope it is just a renewal break and not a forever break, because, well, you have such a talent.

I wish you rest, I wish you well - take care and do hope you come back to us soon.

And perhaps in this time you will go get one of those really ugly HAIRLESS cats? JK. Haha. Kinda.

Hugs to you wherever the road leads you!

Debbie, I will be sad. sad. sad. sad. if you disappear from the blog world. There are a few people who I just feel like I should *KNOW* in the real world too and you are one of those... I hope you will be back in September... I will have a hole in my blog world without you. No lie. You just have a harder time posting because you actually WRITE with so much skill! Some of the rest of us just babble... so come back and just babble if you have to... it's much easier than writing anything of significance. ;) Sending big hugs and lots of blessings to you and your sweet family ~ tanna

So I'm in a heap on the floor, only on the second item on my Monday to-do list, wondering if I can even go on. Maybe you are to Mars by now, TJMaxx for sure!

Here's my suggestion...take some time to catch your breath and enjoy summer. Then write about stuff like Oprah and Casy Anthony,(is that right). You are a great political writer. Those have been some of my favorite posts, a voice of reason. Every once in a while, decorate a cute table or spray something. But always write about the scriptures and values. You are a great teacher and have inspired me countless times.

I'd love it if you just want to bring it to my blog too! xoxo breathe..

Wishing you a refreshing blogging break. We all need it from time to time. And remember, our blog is our personal journal and whether we write about cats, dogs, or nothing at all, readers are simply privileged that we're kind enough to let them take a peek. :)
Rest and peace, friend.

So...I am a week late reading this post and your goodbye post. Loved this post as I do all your posts...the goodbye post, not so much :( I truly have been in a funk...cause crazy as it sounds I consider you a long distance friend that I would surely have the pleasure of meeting when visiting the family in Georgia someday! I hope it is a break (and goodness knows we all need those) and not a forever. You have such a talent for writing and I enjoy each post. Mini sends her best wishes for your journey as well...she says you have inspired her and she looks forward to your comments on my blog about her column. Enjoy yourself for a while and then come on back sugah:)

Love the photo and got a giggle about beards making men look untrustworthy. I remember when I was young, my father thought that men with moustaches, were untrustworthy. I think he changed his mind when Tennessee Ernie Ford came along. :)

Debbie, I just got your message on my blog and wanted to drop by to let you know how much I appreciate you and your friendship. It has been a long, and sometimes insane, summer. After Mom died, we had to dismantle 55 years of life in one house, pray two other family members out of the hospital (we almost lost them!), and deal with my accident where I fell in the street and broke my hand, hit my face, and ouched my knee to the point that people gag when they see it. It has been wilder than the wild mouse at the fair! But God has seen us through it all. I still have my sense of humor, I think, and I still love Jesus and you, too.

I understand the break. I took one, too, and I seem to be wondering if I have anything worthy to say. Life is just changing so drastically. But I am going to try to blog with the borken paw. We shall see.

I want to thank you and your mom again for the prayer support. I appreciate you more than you know and have missed you. I hope you are up and yakking again soon.

Love you,

Sheila

De bid, I am gonna leave this here and see if you get it.
I am SO sorry about your friend. This has been one hard year. I was at a funeral on Monday of a lady who died on Thanksgiving. Her daughter was devastated. She had been her caregiver, and is at sixes and sevens.

I have missed you terribly! I think of you often.

Sending big hugs your way and hoping and praying that The Lord will hold you especially close.
