... and the lawn won.
I fought the lawn, and the lawn won.
That was my version of the vintage tune stuck in my head like an ear worm for the past week.
I kept singing it over and over.
And. Over.
I have no clue what the rest of the words are to the actual song so I just filled the gaps with some carefully placed doot- doot- dooting. It worked for me. It kept my mouth occupied and away from worthless lamentation and grumbly grousing as we attempted to save both a lawn and the privilege of indoor plumbing.
The rest of this post will be short on words. Nobody wants to hear it, anyway. I just figured that some of you might have wondered what had sidelined my flower cart for the past week.
Here's a quick recap.
We tried to salvage as much sod as time and strength would allow before the backhoe came.
Time and strength didn't allow very much.
Mr. Backhoe Man came.
He came with his backhoe, and his big old truck and trailer, and two more tractors.
Which are apparently called tractors because they leave tracks, right?
They tracked in areas not even remotely close to the trench they were digging.
That's because the big pile of gravel that was going into said trench
was unloaded onto the driveway and then tracked across the lawn.
The new junction box that started the whole thing.
The pumpkin latte that helped me cope with the whole thing.
The tractor tracks when it was all said and done.
(I do give them an A for leveling it off nicely.)
And here's where we are in putting it back together again, one clump at a time.
This whackado method came on the advice of a neighbor
who was the first one in the 'hood to survive an unfortunate septic incident.
We'll be adding seed later in the week.
And that's all I have to offer this morning.
Yes, I know it's not the most interesting post, but it is what it is.
'Cause I fought the lawn, and the lawn won.
I fought the lawn, and the lawn won...

Oh, and by the way?
Happy National Coffee Day!!

My parents are going through this process too, but theirs has taken forever! First they couldn't get approval from their township for the plan that would allow them to add on to the system, rather than dig the old one out etc. Then it was the never ending winter. Then approval came, plans were made and there was rain, which slowed the jobs on the docket before theirs. The work on theirs did start about three weeks ago. Not sure its done yet. Nice that yours was relatively quick, though not painless.

And this is why I am grateful for my postage stamp of a front lawn. That looks like an awful lot of work...bending...too much of it! May you be given the strength and don't overdo it. Overdoing it has repercussions that can last a lifetime. Say! Have a youth group who likes raising money? Buy a couple of slaves...errr kiids...to help you along.
oh yeah, I get it!! This year, we fought the roof, 2 water heaters, AC system upstairs, and they all won. Poorer, but still standing! :)
If it isn't one thing, it's another, or at least some years are that way. You survived! That's the good news.
And thanks (not!) for getting that song stuck in my head now. LOL
I have had my share of home repair the past two weeks, actually ongoing for about 4 1/2 years. I am ready to throw in the towel and sell this dump! Hate putting a load of money in a 28 year old house built cutting corners everywhere that holds no sentimental value for me. :-(. But, I turned it over to God and am waiting for guidance and a hefty portion of Divine Intervention. Cause I am at the end if my rope here. I need pumpkin lattes delivered with an IV!
Now it's stuck in MY head...and like you, just the chorus.
Glad the yard/septic work went quickly for you!
Cheers!
Oh great, now that song is stuck in my head.
I don't know, it looks like the lawn won, but I think you guys made a good showing for yourselves. At least it's all done...right??? Makes me sorta appreciate that our mountain home is surrounded by dirt and gravel.
Good news that you get to keep indoor plumbing. Would've gotten kinda chilly walking out to some outhouse in the middle of the piney stick forest in the dead of winter, eh?!
xo
At any cost, keep the indoor plumbing! But what a mess. Still, those pumpkin lattes come in handy for more than thirst-quenching. Wishing you a better week.
now i need some coffee. you poor poor woman. that looks like a lot of work. wow weee!! oh my goodness, that is just too much. please show us the happy grass/lawn shots soon. i think you need a happy project. that makes me feel - i am not sure how to feel? ha. ha!! ( :
After a summer of taking care of our yard I my own I can tell you if I ended up with this there would be some whine and wine in my future. I recommend both for you my dear.
You're the only one I know who can make a post on septic tanks interesting and amusing--smile!
And yes, I guess I saw the title of your post subliminally when I was flipping through the blogs I follow--I suddenly started singing that song and had not a clue why until I went back and actually SAW the title of your post--my my--the brain is a crazy thing--well, at least this one I use on occasion is--
I'm sorry you even had to fight the lawn at all! It's terrible how these things happen. I know I'll be singing "your song" all day now!
Looks like the worst of it is over thankfully, and that's a good thing because the coffee would probably make me have to pee (oops, did I just say that???:@)
You poor dear! You turned an ordeal into a fun and interesting story, for us at least! You deserve more than a pumpkin latte -- add a pumpkin doughnut too!
Katherine
They are talking about breakin' rocks in the hot sun and needing money so this is probably more appropriate now that we know the "whole song".... Just add an "N" in there and you pretty much got it right. The other lyrics, not so much... but you get the drift!!!
It all takes time and next year at this time it will just be a memory and hopefully the song will be out of your head by then... with no reason to return.
"I Fought The Law"
Breakin' rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the law won [x2]
I needed money 'cause I had none

I left my baby and it feels so bad
Guess my race is run
She's the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the
Robbin' people with a six-gun
I fought the law and the law won [x2]
I lost my girl and I lost my fun
I fought the law and the law won [x2]
I left my baby and it feels so bad
Guess my race is run
She's the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won

Oh my, how draining...Stories like this just seem to be everywhere recently. If it's not one thing it is certainly another. The good news? Now yours is all fixed and grass will grow back. The song is stuck in my head now, lol Believe it or not the minute I read your post title, the lawn won popped into my head. Those heads of ours just think alike, haha. Hope the rest of your week is good!
Oh my gosh, what a job! However, the tractor people did good work. Don't overdo it Debbie. We don't want you laid up. We want that Debbie cart moving her wheels. Take care, friend.
Well, I'd say you handled that very well! I'm afraid I'd be a basket case...that was a BIG project!
Oooooh, this makes me nervous. We now have a septic system, too, and I have to admit that stresses me a bit. Now, I see I have good reason! =/
Now, I'LL be hearing I fought the law(n) all day! LOL! blessings and hugs ~ tanna
ps have a pumpkin latte for me, too
I suppose you realize I've been singing that song since Sunday when you apparently still had it in your head and were singing it to me. Such a big job to have to contend with. I will say, having seen your yard, they really did level it off well. I know people whose yards just look like that all of the time. You and the hubs need to be careful and not overdo. You certainly don't need medical problems on top of septic problems, on top of leaking roof problems, on top of rotten wood problems...you get my drift!
Glad you could, as usual, find the humor and share with us.
Oh Debbie that looks beautiful and awful at the same time and your yard will be beautiful again!
You fought the law and the law won!
So funny, although I'm sure it didn't feel that way! You're a great story-teller. I'm glad the pumpkin lattes helped. Now, I'm going to treat myself to another caramel coffee in celebration of nat'l coffee day!
Whaaat?? I, loving coffee more than any living soul on this planet, missed National Coffee Day ????
Yep, that lawn does look like a mess right NOW but come spring, fertilizer, water and TLC, it will be pretty again.
.. what an ordeal to have to go through Debbie.... I think when all the sods and the new seed 'take' you can change the song to.. 'Deb fought the lawn and Deb won'. It will look beautiful again, I'm sure...
Hugs .... Barb xx
Oh.
My.
Aching.
Back.
Aren't you glad THAT'S over with?!?!?!?
Here's a smile for you, sweetie. You need one. :o)
Hugs and happier week to you,
Kelley~
Oh, what a mess! Glad you could at least save some of the sod. Such a blessing to get the work done, but you do wish they could have destroyed less. Glad you had your latte to help you cope! I think I would have turned to a few chocolates - I call them my happy pills!
Boy this looks familiar, like something we did last month! lol Seriously nothing funny about this messy, annoying task. Glad things are back on track (no pun intended).
Oh my goodness. A friend is going through that also, right here in Big D...well little Denton, but they are very close.
Glad you had a pumpkin latte.
Cripes!!!! I would have needed a lot more than a pumpkin latte!!! Is watching grass grow the same as waiting for a pot to boil???
PS: My son starts a teaching job on Monday Yea!
Carol
Oh, for the love of all that is unholy and awful!! What a mess! I feel your pain through and through. I would have had to depend on something a WHOLE LOT stronger than a pumpkin latte, girl! A quart of vodka would have been just a start for me! Egads!
We recently lost a massive tree that had been in our side yard, estimated to be about 150 years old. The tracks left by the equipment used to cut the rest of her down, remove her remains, gouge down the remaining trunk in the ground...un-freakin'-believable! I literally cried. Thank God for my husband who had "the guy" already lined up to come in and lay new sod/seed. This was all about 6 weeks ago. You can barely tell the tree or equipment was ever there now! So there is hope. Hang in there!
Aw take heart, my lawn currently looks as bad as yours and I am so focused on getting the interior of the house painted so that I can have our furniture delivered that our poor neighbors will be forced to look at our mess awhile longer.
Love your new to you lamps!
Yuk! What a mess workmen can make. They aren't worried about how the yard is going to look. They just want to track in there and get the job done as quickly as possible to move on to the next money maker. So sorry you've had to deal with this. I loved your Sunday post. Every time I read one of those, I think that I need to work on seeing God more in day-t0-day life. So glad your mind and heart were open to the root problems. laurie
Oh Debbie, I laughed out loud when I saw this title!! :-D They did make a mess, didn't they? I'm so sorry you had to get your septic tank repaired ($$$) and I'm sorry you had to fix the lawn afterwards. It's just always something isn't it? The joys of owning a home. However, I'm still glad we are able to have a home, even though we have a long list of things that need to be done here. I'm thankful not to be renting, as that is also expensive, and nothing to show for it at the end of the day.
If it's any consolation, you do have a lovely home! I've enjoyed seeing your updates and renovations this past year. Have a wonderful week, my friend!
Hugs,
Denise
What a mess! I was always afraid of having to replace our line since everyone else on this street has already done so.
I was going to say seed. We're heading into more rainy days now but it's still warm enough for the seeds to sprout.
I just read the last 3 posts and I'm sending a big hug from Boise! Sorry I'm mostly MIA, but it sounds like you are coping and progressing, congratulations. You know how much I appreciate your writing and send all the best to my favorite Georgia family! We finish our mission in February and I look forward to more time to blog and keep in touch. Hang in there...love your sweet flower-lady parable. Thanks.
Just sending a hug your way, Debbie... Missing you. blessings ~ tanna
