Completely Blonde Question here...

Why the most computer illiterate person on planet earth with a penchant for fickle finger of fating and double clicks ever started a blog to begin with is one of life's unanswerable questions.

However, she did.

And she has a question that she hopes someone can answer.

I'm trying to get rid of superfluous photos on my hard drive. Della is sluggish again, and Miss Whimsy seems to think it's partly due to the 721, 264 photos I have stored on here for this blog adventure of mine.

Since they are stored in that web album thingie for which I pay extra storage fees, is it safe to delete the original  photo on my computer?

Will it disappear from my old blog posts if I delete the original?

Yes, I know this is a dumb question. I'm asking anyway.

Thanks in advance.

****
Just checking in to say THANK YOU for all the advice and information. I'm going to the store to get a thumb drive or whatever it's called to back up photos before I do any serious deleting today.
Actually, I'm going to get two of them, one for blog posts without family, and one for family photos.

In the meantime, I have been slogging through one picture at a time to delete the ones that are just junk anyway.

I've also taken the advice to do a trial run with a photo on an old blog post just to be positive it won't disappear.
So far... so good...

THANKS!  Maybe I'll actually free some space on here and be able to visit more easily.

It depends upon how you write your blog posts and upload your photos. If you come into blogger and write the post, upload your photos from editor, then your photos should be stored in a picasa web album/google album. To find out you will need to go to https://picasaweb.google.com/home. If all of your photos are in this online based album, then you would be okay to delete them from your personal computer. You could get a thumb drive or two {large ones depending upon your size of each photo} - and back up your photos first, onto it.

I am a blonde and techinically challenged. When my computer was on it's last legs - I bought a flash drive (they are like $10-$15 dollars) and downloaded my photos. Did not take as long as I thought -and I can upload them if I ever want to.

That was six months ago and I haven't missed them :)

I upload to my computer then over to Photobucket. After they go to Photobucket I move them to our home server and off my laptop hard drive, freeing up space and keeping my speed up. I suppose I could delete them as they are being stored elsewhere but I am always afraid Photobucket will go away someday.

I would be very careful, as things disappear when deleting photo, I've noticed, including my blog button debacle. I would save them to a dvd, especially the older ones. If the photo did not appear in a blog post, I would really weed through them and maybe delete? JMHO! Good luck! xo

I am NOT the one to ask Debbie... but you did, didn't you?

I can't believe the timing. Tonight I limited myself two hours to purge/update pages 12 and 13 of my blog posts. Believe me, I needed 2x2x2 more hours...

I need help big-time, but here's how I do my photos.

1. Download into iPhoto on my MacBook Air.
2. Edit them and rename those I'll use on Kelley Highway.
3. Save them in folders; for example, 2012... June 2012... Recipe Junction, etc.
4. Upload them through Picasa.
5. Add captions.
6. Organize in albums there.

Time Machine backs up our work all throughout our day.

Tonight I deleted several posts, and here's what I did with the images.

1. Opened my blog post in two different "windows" so I could look at them and delete/work/edit in one.
2. Deleted photos FIRST in any blog post I planned to delete.
3. Picasa stated "It may take 24 hours to delete these photos," but the post deleted immediately.
4. Wrote myself a note to go back and make sure the photos were gone and the posts. I'll work on those two pages (12 and 13) only.
5. Next time, I'll focus on pages 10 and 11. One step at a time.

Help! Should I be doing this differently?!

Love the question, Blondie!

Redhead

Who knew that it was Photo Purging Season? I spent all four days of the Memorial Day weekend deleting duplicates, combining files, etc. -- but I'm still FAR from having my pics organized. (And I'm a brunette! LOL) Debbie, I feel your pain! As I understand, once a photo has been uploaded to Picasa Web Albums, it can be removed from your computer. I'm a HUGE chicken when it comes to my pics, so (after cleaning up your pic files) I would copy them elsewhere. The best and easiest place is probably an external hard drive, but you could also transfer them to disks or thumb drive(s) as others have suggested. REMEMBER: Picasa Web Albums is NOT the same thing as Picasa.

ALSO, if you're a member of Google+, I believe that Picasa Web Albums and Google+ are still interconnected; if you delete a pic from one place, it will also be deleted from the other. For example, DO NOT delete pics from Google+ albums thinking they'll still be in Picasa Web Albums; from what I've been reading, they won't.

I feel like I just wrote a blog post! Maybe I'd better get back to organizing my pics... Good luck! Della will be VERY happy, I'm sure, once you give her some breathing room!

Well, I just had to click on the "source" of your picture and read the dumb blonde joke there. The only thing is this--how in the world did she come up with 300 if she is so dumb?

The best thing we own (and I don't know if anyone said so, I have not had a chance to read the other comments) is an external hard drive. It is connected to the computer, updates itself daily and I don't worry about those virtual places shutting down or crashing. You can get one for $50 with a lot of space. Just a thought ;)

Well gosh, from one blonde to another, I hope I get something out of reading the comments, but most are too technical for this blonde. I do transfer pictures to one of those little hard drive thingies, and I don't think they disappear from anywhere else on the net??? laurie

I use photobucket but I suggest to do a test post and delete the picture and check it out. [o= That is the only answer I could think of. [o=

Ohhh I finally got the post up. [o= And I am soooooo glad you stuck around my friend. You are such a blessing to me. ((HUGS))

I'm glad you asked this question, because you got some good answers which I, too, needed to see! Thanks!

Love your post pic. I keep my pictures, both the ones I take and the ones I download in a folder on an external drive. They cost less than $100. You can also put your music and docs on them which frees up even more space on the computer. Alternatively you can also save them to a $10 usb drive. If you go that route buy a 8g or higher.

Copying is real easy.
Open the external drive or usb.
Open folder on computer where pictures are.
Press "control A" to highlight all the pictures in folder and then control C to copy all of them at once.
Go to usb or external drive and press control V.

Have Fun!

Well, I'm blonde and these answers are to technical for me. I have a Mac and when I was at the Apple store I asked that question, the guy there said once you put them in a post you can delete them from your computer, but I have not tried. If anyone is reading this that is a techie, could you explain in idiot language. I don't even know what Picasa is!!! I do you a back up thingy I plug my laptop into at night and it is a good idea to start now, I always label the ones I put on my blog so if I ever want to delete pictures I will know which ones are on my blog and which aren't

Carol I am going to check back to see what comes in for answers

Looks as if we had complementary posts today. I'm glad that you asked the question because it helps everyone get it straightened around in thinking. Since all Blogger's pictures are stored in Picasa albums, I don't think it will hurt if you get rid of a photo on your computer's hard drive. But think twice, because you can't get them back. Do you have an Exterior Hard Drive? They are around $100 and hold tons and tons and tons of photos. The benefit of that is that even if the computer crashes, you'll still have your files.

I'm glad you asked & got answers because this brunette has no clue about anything like this! I'm going to read the comments now...maybe I'll learn something.

Hi Debbie,
Just want I needed! I learned a lot from your comments...I'm so glad that you wrote this post! I have an external hard drive, so that's a start, right? I love modern technology, BUT...I know just enough to get myself into trouble...so I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you. Here's my story: when I switched from Blogger to Wordpress everything worked - my son set me up. Then when I switched back to Blogger (I did it myself), I lost pictures on Blogger :( And they are not on Picasa...so if you ever switch, be careful.

Mrs. Kelley Dibble said...

Picas is not equal to Picasa Web album? Didn't know THAT either. I've learned so much from the comments, too!

Oops... I meant to type "Picasa..."

I am here to say hello - I don't know the answer - please listen to someone else. Lol sandie

I don't know that I can answer your question, but since we're all sharing what we do, here's what I do. I take way, way, way too many photos, like thousands upon thousands, which I upload directly to my computer and immediately delete the ones I don't want to keep. That reduces the amount of pics I need to store by quite a bit. I never delete pics that I use in my blog posts.

Would love to help you with this, friend - but I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to get internet at my new palatial Hillbilly Mansion.

Sometimes I don't regret not having photos on my blog.

And for the record, I don't think this was a blonde question - I think it was a Baby Boomer thing...

Good luck...

I so appreciate this helpful advice, and the honesty with which you openly asked the question. I ask myself the same questions quite often.

I store mine on the flash drives as well as on an external hard drive called a Passport which works with the backup thingie on my Mac. Very technical you know. My biggest problem is trying to organize all this. My son told me I need to use one of those sites, but I don't trust it. Probably something like keeping your money buried in the back yard...
