Some Like It Hot

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but we're hard core grillers around here. We'll grill just about anything if someone suggests it, and we grill four seasons of the year, rain or shine. When it's raining, Sir Lotsa Hair pulls his trusty Weber kettle just under the garage roof and makes like a lightning rod.

That's how he managed to grill last night in the middle of a monsoon. I thought with all that water, it would be a good night to try grilling some watermelon.

'Cause it's on my  Sand Pail List, and I'm kind of themey like that.

I had seen the suggestion in a magazine which I thought was the June edition of Better Homes and Gardens, but after turning every page, I couldn't find it there. I couldn't find it in any other magazine around here either. Either I dreamed up the whole thing or ripped it out for safe keeping and then lost it.

I do that a lot.

Instead,  I googled recipes and came up with this one

Grilled Watermelon

Cut watemelon slices about an inch thick
Remove rind and salt both sides.
Place slices on a rack above some paper towel for 20 minutes.
Rinse salt from surface and brush with olive oil.
Grill each side 3 minutes.

Miss Whimsy took a bite and said, "Interesting and different..."
I took a bite and said, "Meh"
The husband took a bite and said that he liked it.

Of course, he went on to say that he didn't usually like watermelon, but he liked it this way because it didn't taste watermelony. Well, that's just silly. Isn't it the job of a watermelon to taste watermelony?  It's not tofu. It has its own distinct taste, and that taste is watermelony.

(By the way... what?
I've been married to the man for almost 28 years
and didn't know that he didn't like watermelon?
I just thought he was being generous.)

So here's the review. Even though I'm a huge fan of other grilled fruit, I personally like my watermelon cold.  Maybe the incredible disappearing recipe from Better Homes and Gardens was better. I don't know, and I'm not sure I'll try it if I find it.

I did, however, like the way grilled hunks tasted on our side salads.

Of course, just about anything tastes good with feta, red onion, and balsamic vinegar, but it's still worth tossing some slices on the gill to change up the taste of a salad if you want.

I am hereby putting grilled watermelon in the sand pail and calling it completed. While searching for that recipe, though, I also saw one for watermelon sorbet. I'm going to put it on the Sand Pail list to try when the husband is out of town.

That is, if I can remember where I put the page when I ripped it out.

So when it comes to fruit, do you like it hot, or do you like it cold?
I'd love any and all suggestions or recipes.

Now I read about it in Reader's Digest and it says to brush the watermelon with olive oil, minced onion, salt and pepper, grill about 5 minutes per side until they caramelize and begin to dry out and even to serve it with cheese between two pieces of bread as a burger!

Good morning! Well I will admit grilled watermelon sounded kind of funny....don't know if I would like any way but cold and drippy....and I guess I will admit I haven't ever had ANY grilled fruit. Lots and lots of grilled veggies, but never the fruit. Now my curiosity is up...haha. I see some happening in the near future. Have a good day!

So funny! Thanks for being our guinea pig. I was wondering about that one myself. You may be right and there may be a better recipe out there but....I am looking forward to hearing more about the sorbet. Now that sounds truly promising! I love this post because it really is useful info. I too would see and have seen something like this in a mag and want to try and then think, meh, not so much. I really loved that you shared this. Have a great day!

I'm with Sir Lotsa Hair; I don't like watermelon. AT ALL. I'm not a huge fruit fan overall, and I don't like ANY melons, for that matter. But I do like grilled pineapple ... and hot peach cobbler and hot (or cold) apple pie and really cold banana pudding. See the pattern? The sweeter/fatter the recipe ingredients, the more I like it!

I always have fun reading about your sand pail lists. Grilled watermelon - meh. I like it cold though.

I think I like most fruit cold unless it is like a cobbler or something like that.

Your photos were beautiful.

Does he grill in the garage - that is what under the garage roof would be for us.

Love, sandie

I'm thinking any hot fruit should be in a pie or cobbler for my taste. I like fresh fruit the way it comes. The one fruit I do not like in a cobbler or pie is cherry. I only like cherries fresh. You were quite adventurous to try grilling that watermelon. Good for you for trying. Grilled pineapple sounds good...
Glad you finally found out hubby doesn't like watermelon LOL!

I'm betting you saw the grilled watermelon on pinterest last week like me. Crazy how we can't remember where we find things, there are so many to choose from. Also, there's something so romantic about grilling in the rain.

PS...I like mine cold too. My husband eats,(and loves) the pink part of the watermelon and I juice the rind, (the vegetable part). Just call us the Spratts.

I love watermelon graphics and prints but I don't like the taste of watermelon. Grilling it doesn't appeal to me at all.

When you grill pineapple for Susan, put a few extra rings on for me. That is something I really like.

Well, I would be willing to give it a try but I think I would rather have mine cold too. It just seems more summer-y, you know? BUT I do love grilled peaches and grilled pineapple so go figure? Maybe because they are so sweet anyway that the grilling helps balance that out. Or maybe I'm just weird...yep...that's probably what it is. LOL!

I must say grilled watermelon sounds meh to me! But I do love it cold and with salt...I know bad for me but hey I grew up eating it like that in Texas! Yum...now I want some watermelon! Oh and my Mr doesn't like it much either. Men...hugs, Linda

I really like any of the "stone" fruit grilled (peaches, plums, etc) but watermelon has to be icy cold for me. xo

I'd try some grilled watermelon for the experience at least. LOVE it cold. I do love grilled pineapple and peaches. Maybe they have more sugar content so they grill better? Glad you're willing to be the guinea pig.

I just asked my husband if he liked watermelon. He does, but who knew Sir Lotsa Hair didn't. Go figure.

I like my fruit COLD. So does my husband, who refrigerates everything. He even sticks bananas in there. We are not fans of mushy, either. So slightly under-ripe, nearly frozen fruit is our thing!

I'm not sure I'd like grilled watermelon. However, grilled VEGIES is another thing entirely. We especially love grilled zucchini.

By the way, my hubby is a Mr. Weber, too. I think he'd grill me if I got too close to the fire...

Now that is interesting Debbie. I guess you never know until you try it. We made a dessert pizza in the pizza oven last weekend. It was delish. I think the grilled watermelon would be great in a salad, not alone though. Thanks for sharing, I may have to try it. Funny what we learn about our husbands even though we thought we knew it all LOL!

You just thought he was generous! Ha! Well, I'm thinking just from the sounds of it, that I'd like my watermelon just as you have in the photo, which is why I'm here in the first place and am now finding myself so wishing for watermelon that I may have to get some today.

Very funny post -- snort worthy really, lol. I am a cold watermelon kind of gal although I like most anything else grilled and we too will grill year round -- even in the snow :)

Blessings!

Hmmmm, not certain about the grilled watermelon. I like grilling a LOT too but something about watermelon and the grill just doesn't seem to go together. I think because it is something that is suppose to be cold and by virtue of grilling it, that's taking the cold refreshment out of it....what will you try next?

Debbie,
How I have missed your delightful sense of humor. I've been back reading, catching up on your adventures of the past few months. Love the "Sand Pail List" for summer...I'm right there with you on the picnic and eating outside (I love breakfast on the patio - but don't do it for just me). I really need to do this at least once this summer!
Thank you so much for your prayers and coming over to catch up on what I am doing. I tried to post pics on my blog this morning and just kept messing up (been away too long?) so I gave up for today. "Tomorrow is another day," said Scarlet and I have to agree with her for now!

I have been way behind on blogging and just got caught up reading your wonderful posts I've missed out on!

Ironically, I have been wanting to try the grilled watermelon thing for a while too. But after your review, I think I'll pass. I think you're right. Watermelon is probably best cold. Thanks for trying it out for me. :)

Sharlotte said...

Ok, Debbie, I have NEVER heard of grilling watermelon! But I have heard of other fruits...what else have your tried? I've heard grilled peaches are good. I've only grilled pineapple and it was very tasty!
As for watermelon, I like mine ice cold...and I eat it with a spoon. I like to make little circles and scoop them out! I know...tmi. ;)

Granted I've never tried grilled watermelon, but I'm going to side with you...I prefer my watermelon cold. After all, watermelon is supposed to be cool & refreshing and I'm not one to mess with a good thing. ;D

Well, I like my fruit cold... unless of course it's pie and then I like it hot then cooled... As for the grilled watermelon I saw it in a magazine too, but in my haste to keep THAT clutter down, mine is long gone too:@)

Hand over your man because we have soooo much in common, I don't like watermelon cold either and your right, he was just being nice to say he liked it warm...Glad you got that off your sand pail list! Even happier to know I don't have to put it on mine! Funny post as usual

Never heard of this until tonight, and we grow watermelons and are grillers too! Don't know why I haven't thought of it before, and since it is not on your redo list, i think i will leave the watermelon right where it is right now, and that is in the fridge. ~smile~
I am so glad i have you to test for me.
BTW I found the fusion spray paint at Wal-Mart today. Do you see the influence you have on me? a very good influence!! I might add!
Hugs,

Meh to watermelon in general. The grilled stuff looked good, though.
Grilled pineapple, that's good. Haven't really had any other grilled fruit.
Lately I've been roasting stuff. Get some fresh green beans, toss with a little olive oil, salt pepper. Roast on a baking sheet in oven 15-20 minutes, and eat like french fries. Yum!

Yummy, I love watermelon.

Mevely317 said...

Gosh, I wished I liked fruit. I mean it looks SO good ... and relatively harmless ... but I can't tell you the last time I voluntarily ate any.
So maybe, just maybe I would enjoy it grilled ...since your Sir says it doesn't taste watermelony. (See, he sounds trustworthy!) Is there anything you recommend to make it taste more like a Porterhouse?

Love this!! I grill year round as well. Summer comes and it's almost done every night. Our new fav is to grill peaches and add to a salad with some grilled steak, feta and balsamic dressing. Y.U.M.
I grilled pineapple the other night for teriyaki chicken. I haven't been able to eat a lot of raw fruit, but if I can cook it, I'll eat it!
don't think I'll try the watermelon recipe, though. My dad salted every piece of melon he ate. Ack.

When it comes to watermelon, I like mine room temperature (the cold out of the fridge hurts my teeth when I am scarfing down huge round bites from a twirling spoon!). I love all other fruit either way... hot, cold, cooked, raw. Just love it. ;) That salad looks marvelous, Debbie!! blessings ~ tanna

P.S.... your Sunday blog was wonderful! I feel the same thing, and it was good to read it in your words and the scripture was perfect. Oh how soon we can forget what is our first love, and how the church is what He created, to spread the life saving news of who He is. We ARE His church... boy did my dad ever preach that!! :)

The grilled watermelon looks really interesting, Debbie. I might just try it one of these days but I think I will like the sorbet better...Christine

Well thanks for taking one for the team and saving me attempting this one. I have seen grilled melon but wasn't sure if I was willing to give up the cold, juicyness to the grill, now I know I'm not! I just grill my pineapple and enjoy my watermelon the old fashioned way:)

Hiya Deb-ness! Soooo happy to be back visiting on Blogland - my lurking days these past few project laden and mental exhaustion weeks were making me a bit irritable. So much to hear about - so much to say - and no time within which to do so!

Today is my guilty pleasure blog reading and catching up day now that I've caught two of my blogs up with posts and will get my husband's devotional typed up and posted tomorrow - poor guy - he writes away and I just plunk it on the pile!

Now - the Washington trip thing - super! Hate it there, myself. Not much of a city girl and I prefer wheels with convenient parking directly in front of where I want to go. However, your daughter's apartment is a stunner - and coming with a secret garden and 20 minute walk to work? Dreamy - except in inclement weather. Museums are nice - and all the historical monuments - inspiring. Could do without the Congress session - been once and came away with the same opinion - how DO they get anything done when they appear to be so indifferent to whoever is speaking. Oh - little gets accomplished - so the newspapers say - no wonder. Anyway - preferring to stay out of politics, over-rated eateries with long lines, and crowded halls when I'm vacationing, I would opt for spending the afternoon at daughter's apartment reading a good book by the long windows with those filtered rays of sunshine spilling across the daybed (I'd keep the browns) and a cup of tea at hand. And, perhaps, that nifty salad of yours with the grilled watermelon chunks - sounds yummy!

Sounds like the Lord paves the way for our kids and we just get to praise Him with grateful hearts along the way. Happy mom.

Joy to you, friend!
Kathy

Debbie, so glad you tried the grilled watermelon. Now I don't care about trying it. I know I'd prefer mine cold. The salad looks good though, but I think it would be good even without the grilled watermelon. laurie

Oh my yum! I love watermelon. Have you ever had it with feta? My husband's grandmother used to est it that way. It's actually good, but I like sweet and salty.

I have never had it grilled but I may try it just to say I did. [o= But I like mine cold, crisp and watery. [o= Ohhh now I want some! lol

We have been waiting for it to come from local farmers. So, that means I have to be patient. ((sigh))

That salad looks yummy!
