A Breakfast For Two

A simple enough pleasure, surely, to have breakfast alone with one's husband, but how seldom married people in the midst of life achieve it.
Anne Spencer

Today's tablescape is actually one that has been 26 years in the making.

I have planned to set up a breakfast table in the master bedroom for pretty much our entire marriage. With the new empty nest, I thought it might be the perfect week to begin a new tradition.

So I called in the team.

We started with this skirted table from the living room. I've been collecting dishes in the room colors of yellow and green for a while, putting this table together in my mind in bits and pieces.

It will remain set up in the room.

Next, we added some pears for the center.
Pears are the husband's favorite fruit.
(and it doesn't hurt that they are the right color, too...)

Both the cow creamer and the pear dish belong
 to the Duchess
This dish is Haviland Limoges.
It's on loan until I find a suitable replacement...

... because I love the pears there.
I'll have to susbstitute faux ones when we're not actually using it.
Real ones wouldn't last a day with the husband around.
After 26 years, he still doesn't *get* that whole
just for looks thing.

Maybe, I 'll decoupage some....

Everything else is actually mine.
As I said, I have been collecting for this table every time I visit an antique or junk shop.

I have had the linens for years. They are tea towels from one of those trunks of previous yakabouts.
Of course, now that I think about it,
that makes them technically from the Duchess as well.

I loved the dishes because not only were they the right colors, but they also said, "breakfast" to me.
Of course, when I turned them over, I found this.

Well, of course...
Only in Debbie Land would the stuff not pilfered from my mother
still bear her mark.

I found the stemware at the same shop.
I liked the color.

The flatware is Act I by Oneida.
It's from The Great Wedding Adventure of 1984.
I am on the lookout for some gold ones to use here...
 Eventually

My favorite thing on the table is the coffee server.
It's another second hand score.
I flatly refuse to check out the bottom.

Adding the food.

Just for this tablescape.

I'll reset with fresh food for the husband on Saturday morning.

 Sorry I can't invite you,
but this is a  table
for two.

I guess it's also a Simple Pleasure, but that would be cheating...
I haven't yet had the pleasure.

You really have been talking about...planning this table for years. Turned out so pretty. Not surprised the Duchess turned up on the dishes. However, I don't recall her saying you could "borrow" that dish. You know you'd never look for a replacement because you LOVE it so.

If the husband doesn't want to participate, I'll be happy to come spend the night sometime he's away and we'll not only play dishes, we'll have our own party as well.

Ha!
You must have been out of the room. I distinctly heard her say, "Deb-or-ah, since you are my favorite, you may keep this dish until you find a replacement."

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I have only one thing to say. Liar liar pants on fire!

If the Duchess commented, she would sooooo agree with ME!

It's just lovely! How romantic to have breakfast in the master! I'd feel like I was on vacation! I'm cracking up that those dishes say "Duchess" on the back! That's hysterical! Oh, and Act I by Oneida was my FAVEORITE pattern. I had it picked out for YEARS before I actually got married. I looove it!

I love that you have done this in your master bedroom. How fun it will be to have breakfast and coffee in your pjs in your bedroom with no children around. I know it will be hard having an empty nest but I guess there are some perks.

Your table looks so beautiful. It is so lady like.

What a lovely idea - 26 years of planning really paid off! If you ever put your house up for sale, you'll have to include this set-up in the master bedroom.

Debbie,
You are so good at tabelscaping - it looks beautiful! How funny that "Duchess" is on the bottom of the dishes, too. I laughed when you said you refused to look at the bottom of the coffeeserver! Too funny!

This post and your tablescape make me extremely happy! 'Maybe I'll decoupage them"...I'm still giggling. The coffee pot is beautiful...the shape reminds me of 'Old Paris.' I'm a huge fan of anything Haviland, and I'm sure that the Duchess did intend for you to keep it until.........
I adore that you create table designs with your mom...that makes me the happiest of all. I miss my mom and my mother-in-love. You are truly blessed. Thanks for stopping by my post. Come any time. Cherry Kay

I've had a delightful visit. The table is wonderful and I love the dishes you found! No don't you turn that teapot over. and besides possession is 9/10th of the law!! Beautiful. Romance is not dying and you just proved it. Lovely, beautiful, and so inviting.

Looks like a revved-up romantic transition in Debbie-land! Love it and I'm so glad you are honeymooning again in your empty nest. I remember when all the kids were gone and my husband kept saying, "I payed good money for this," meaning weekend getaways at hotels on occasion. We still see lots of our kids and love that too!

Now about that table, it is glorious! I love the pears and duchess dishes, stacker with fresh fruit and lovely goblets. Enjoy a lazy Saturday morning together!

Debbie,
LOVE the table - you crack me up, friend!! The whole "Duchess" on the bottom of the plates was a riot! And then your reference to that decoupage addiction you have...too funny!

I also wanted to comment on your daughter's finished room. It's downright "homey" and cleaner than it will ever be again. I'm a little disappointed about the roommate change - was really looking forward to seeing a close-up of the bearskin rug. Hmmmm...

I'm going to let you and your husband enjoy this table for two - but just this once. I expect to be included in the next invitation for the invisible people, OKEY DOKEY?!

xoxo

Will you really have breakfast together in your room??? How romantic! Right now all I can think about is how much more I would have to dust if it were in my room....

I really like your writing style. The table is beautiful and such a luxury. I've had an empty nest for 7 years (how can it be that the last one went to college that long ago) and my husband would pass out cold if I served him such a beautiful breakfast! Everything is so elegant. Very nice.
