Most of the time, I love living in small town America and wouldn't trade it for the world. The one possible exception would be when I'm trying to shop for accessories. I mean, it's not that small. It's a college town after all.
Is it too much to ask for some simple red doo dads, people?
It's Valentines time, for goodness sake...
See, I'm (still) in the middle of that long overdue kitchen redecorating. I've painted my walls yellow and used a lot of black. My black toile curtains were my inspiration. (Well, technically Manuela at The Pleasures of Homemaking was my inspiration. She's the Toile Queen of Blogland. )
So I have my yellow and black,
and now I'm ready for some pops
of red to scatter about the room...
..which leads us back to the original redless town lamentation and a little craft therapy over the weekend.
A few of you might remember this sentimental old yard chick that I dug up from the Duchess's back yard last year.
She has an old mother hen who goes with her.
I had cleaned them up a bit
and was trying to figure out where to use them.
Unfortunately,
they are still too primitive for this house.
They looked dopey any place that I tried to use them.
We did use them on our barnyard tablescape last year.
So I took Lil Chick and gave her another coat of paint.
Actually, just primer.
Then decoupaged with some red toile tissue paper that I had around here.
I've named her Manuela.
I like Manuela, but I'm a little iffy about the shade of red. Plus, I think she needs a little ribbon or something.
So what do you think? It would be easy to cover over her with a solid or a brighter toile if I can find one. I'm pretty certain that I don't want the old mother hen in the same pattern.
I was thinking maybe one of these?
Or even a polka dot?
Too much?
Keep her plain?
Send her back to the barnyard?
Send her back to the barnyard?
Anyway,
I have an adventure planned which should solve this
little red lamentation,
little red lamentation,
but you'll just have to wait to hear about it.
Time to get ready for school.

Debbie, I love them! And I like Manuela in her toile garb. She's so cute!
I would also like both of them in the black paper you have there. You could change them at whim.
Loving this. Really loving this!
If you get a chance, please email me later. I can't click on your email and mail you because I have never had that clicky thing installed properly on this computer. I can click from Mr. Magpie's, but he isn't here.
XO,
Sheila :-)
I love the little chick.. now red and white. What a great idea to decoupage the toile on it. I also like both of the black and white pattern papers for the big chicken. My living room is painted yellow and the accent colors are red and black too. I love the combination.
They are wonderful! I like the toile decoupage too. Color? I like the red and the black, either way.
ohh....and your kitchen wall color is Perfect.
Oh, I love, love, love the toile baby chick! Love her! You've got like my favorite color combo going on in there. Yellow, white and black and red? Um, yes please! Gorgeous!
Oh these are great...now I am inspired...my new colors started last summer, red and Bahama blue..now you have given me more ideas...now when it warms up again...snow today...and for Texas that is a big deal, I can pull out my paint. Next project first is mercury glass charger plates...but still need the temps up higher
Wow Debbie, you have a hard choice! I love the little chick, and think the big one would look great in the black houndstooth, and I even like it the way it is now.
My whole house is yellow and black and red and green so I am loving your new kitchen. {Mine has red toile curtains, your chick would love living here!!}
Have a great day.
Sue
I love the black and white. Cover her with that!!! You are so clever and creative ... I know that the mother hen will look sweet anyway you decide.
Blessings,
Bren
Hi Debbie,
Love Toile anything! Chickie (Manuela) looks adorable in red. I think Momma would look good in the black houndstooth. Just my thoughts but I'm likin' the way you're are putting everything together. :)

I love the little one in red and I think the bigger one will look great in the black and white.
Love,
sandie
So pretty! Manuela is adorable. I vote for a red ribbon on her. And I'd put Mom in the pattern on the right. The "checkerboard" is cool - but too "uniform." After all, Manuela is "unevenly patterned" - seems that genetically, she inherited that beautiful randomness from her mother.
Just my two cents!
p.s. Just wondering - does Mom have a cute little name, too?
Alrighty...so I want to know why you haven't been showing us more of this kitchen? I mean, that was just not right only letting us see a tiny snippet of those gorgeous b/w toile curtains! :-) I love what you did with Manuela but I'm thinkin' that her mama might need to ease into the new trendsetting styles a bit...I kinda like her just plain ol self, but that is just me! Does that mean I'm plain too? Hmmmm...
Vanessa
why haven't you sent me any pictures?? I want to see the pretty curtains!
I'm lovin' this room! I vote houndstooth on the Mama hen and try a ribbon on the baby. You can always take the ribbon off if you don't like it. I LOVE the bakers rack and the curtains. Can't wait to see it in person. Great job sis.
Love this problem....maybe mama hen should be painted red? then add a black toile ribbon? And a bright red ribbon on the chick a dee? Hmmm, but I bet anything your adventure will bring nothing other than something fantastic!!

I like her in red and white -- maybe with a ribbon around her neck. I like the bigger one in black and white -- not sure which pattern. Have fun! Joni
Aunt Debbie,
I love what I can see of your kitchen so far! I can't wait to see it in person. Also, I will keep my eyes out for red accessories for you!
I love the baby bird just as she is, so different than anything you see and the big one...me loves polka dots!
Carol
Debby, I love her. And she looks so much like something Manuela would do! It just proves that necessity is indeed the mother of invention! laurie
Love love love the new color scheme and as you know black/white toile is one of my favorites.
That little chickadee was so darn cute, you are a master at decoupage. Ok, I did have to chuckle about the rooster in toile, can't you just hear him as he crows cockadoo a toile?!
Or is that a mother hen?? Anyway, it is more fun to pun with a rooster.
I'd be leaning towards a pillow ticking stripe in black and white.
Oh I love the toile! Pretty!
